AQCI #2 – Nikolay Savov 1. Central quotation “Law determines the rights of any individual and the way in which he or she is incorporated into society.” (Rex & Kuper, 2001: 210) 2. Argument While in the context of drawing the concept of multiculturalism and, more precisely, its ideal form, Rex and Kuper argue that is only through law that individuals become a part of a cohesive whole. It determines how they are going to participate in the social and political life. 3. Question How can we explain continued discrimination and disadvantage depending on ethnicity in regards to matters when law threat individuals equally? 4. Experiential connection While I do recognize the importance of law for any individual, I believe that it is not only in the light that we should follow one’s (potential) realization in society to get a good grasp of reality. One example I have observed was the working of what seems to me as a “customary law”, effectively restricting gypsies from work opportunities or from taking part in different social activities, on the basis of some perceived differences between them and the others. 5. Textual connection In his analysis of “The consequences of anti-gypsy racism in Europe”, Ian Hancock draws connecting lines between racism against African-Americans and that against gyspies in Europe. He came to the conclusion that policy change, or even system change, might not be enough to resolve a hot issue as this: “It is not simply the system which has to change, or opportunities to be equalized, but—we must also work to change peoples' attitudes.” 6. Implications The implications of depending only on law to achieve social change can be dramatic, if they are not followed by determined efforts to encourage and environment and a mentality that would provide for the smooth reception and effective implementations of new laws.
