For the past number of years Trócaire has enlisted the help of volunteers to help them
in their work. These volunteers have been involved in many different ways from
organising coffee mornings to speaking at weekend Masses. In the diocese we have
worked closely with Trócaire over the past year to further develop ways in which our
diocese and Trócaire can continue to complement each other’s work. The fruits of our
labour have resulted in an initiative called ‘Diocese of Kerry Trócaire Volunteers’. We
are looking for one person from each parish to be involved in this important role. There
are people in many parishes that are interested in Social Justice. If you know of such a
person you might encourage them to volunteer. The Trócaire volunteer will be offered
training by Trócaire. If you are interested in supporting the work of Trócaire at parish
level, there is further information from Fr Michael Moynihan (Trócaire Representative,
Diocese of Kerry) 0876551902 or dioceseofkerry.ie or janet.twomey@trocaire.org by
November 6th. Also, contact Fr. Kevin to get more information.

A Remedy to Isolation
Back in the mid-1990’s, I asked a Garda friend what was the most pressing
social ill he encountered in his daily work in the community. Expecting him to
detail the destruction that alcohol and drugs were wreaking in the locality, I was
taken aback with his answer. He said to me that ‘isolation’ was the most pressing
social ill he came across in his work.
That was a comment from 2 decades ago and the situation has certainly
become more acute in the intervening years. Even in the closely knit communities
that exist in our own parish, the social bonds between us are weakening. The
reasons are varied but talking about the demise of connections in the community
does not get us anywhere. It is easy to sit back and take it as a by-product of our
modern society that we can do nothing about. But, on the other hand, we could
also address the issue of isolation and see what can be done to remedy it in our
own community.
Going to sporting occasions, a game of cards, or a night out on the town
naturally brings people together. And that is to be warmly welcomed. But there are
others who may be more comfortable in a different setting. This is an opportunity
to explore what could be set up to welcome people who are interested in different
past-times in a different setting.
If this strikes a chord with you and you would like to explore it a little further,
an invitation is issued to you to attend a gathering in The Nagle Rice Community
Centre in Milltown on Sunday, November 1st at 4:00 p.m. It is completely informal
gathering and the shape it takes will depend completely on those who attend. It
will be an opportunity to share thoughts with others about connecting with others
who attend the gathering. Perhaps, in time, this connection might reach those who
are isolated in their own homes. The population of the parish is undoubtedly
growing but it could, paradoxically, also lead to increased isolation.
We have in our midst sparkling new community centres that were built
through the generosity of the entire community. It would be a pity if they were not
utilised by all streams of life in the parish.
This invitation is issued to all age groups in the parish. It might appear to be
an appeal to an older age group but I hope that, in spite of someone’s age, people
would see this issue as something worth giving their time and thought to. It is
simply a gathering to tease out the issue. Again, where it leads to depends on the
ideas of those in attendance Failte romhaibh go leir.
Fr. Gerard’s Night
As was flagged in last week’s newsletter, there will be a night for Fr. Gerard in
appreciation of his ministry in Milltown/Listry Parish. It is an opportunity to
show appreciation for his presence and efforts in the parish as well as to wish
him well in his new ministry as chaplain in Kerry General Hospital.
Fr. Gerard will celebrate the regular Friday evening Mass in Milltown on
November 6th and this will be followed by a social gathering in Muintir na Tíre,
Community Hall in the square.
For anyone who would like to contribute towards a cash gift to Fr. Gerard, we
have attached an envelope to this week’s newsletter. Please drop these back to
the presbytery or in the collection basket at Mass next weekend. Envelopes will
be available also in the church and feel free to bring one to someone who would
like to make a contribution.

had by all.
