Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Seminar Announcement Friday, April 19, 2013 CE 201 12:00pm – 1:00pm Historic Bridges in Arizona and Their Engineers Jerry A. Cannon, P.E., S.E. Structural / Bridge Engineer Cannon Consultants, LLC Abstract The history of more than 30 of Arizona’s historic bridges and their engineers, from Arizona’s territorial days and its early days of statehood through to about 1949, gives insight to the structural problems related to these bridges, how the problems were solved, and what repairs were made to keep the bridges in service. The engineers who designed these bridges include the internationally famous John Rennie who designed the London Bridge which now stands in Lake Havasu City; the nationally famous Ralph Modjeski who helped design the Oakland-Bay Bridge in San Francisco; J.B. Girand, Arizona’s first Territorial Engineer; Ralph Hoffman, an Arizona State Bridge Engineer for nearly 30 years who designed over 200 bridges including the famous Navajo Bridge over the Colorado River; and, Daniel Luten, who designed Arizona’s Luten arch bridges.
