A Peek at the Week
Kindergarten Reading and Math: This
week in reading we read an informational text
called Animal Babies. We learned many facts
about baby animals for each letter of the
alphabet. We talked about the main topic of the
text and recalled 2-3 key details about a key
animal. In math, we have been working on
counting (making transitions to the next decade),
skip counting by 10’s and have read books about
measuring and using hands and feet to measure
objects.
First Grade Reading and Math: In reading,
we have read several stories from our Unit 2
anthology. We have worked on “r” and “s”
blend words and new sight words. We are
writing our own narrative story based on Aunt
Minnie and the Twister. In math we have
moved from solving addition story problems to
subtraction story problems. We’ve had some
great “math talks” about how addition and
subtraction are different and strategies we can
use to subtract numbers.
Writing: During our writing workshop we are
drawing and writing about things we know
about, using a bold beginning, mighty middle,
and excellent ending. The six traits of writing are
Ideas, Organization, Voice, Sentence Fluency,
Word Choice and Conventions. We are
practicing writing our own stories. We are
currently focusing on organization, voice and
word choice.
Reading Initiative K/1 &K12 Leading by
Reading On TUESDAY another officer came to
our classroom to read aloud to the
students. The children have really enjoyed this
and are looking forward to next week’s reader.
Science/Social Studies
Mrs. Campbell’s class has begun ”traveling”
the continent of Antarctica. In Australia, Mrs.
Volz’s class has reading and discussing the
unique animals of Australia. We also are
currently making Dot Art inspired by the
artwork of Australia’s Aboriginal people. In
Antarctica we are learning about the many
different kinds of penguins and other arctic
animals.
Classroom/School Community Building
Our lesson this week was focused on how to
identify feelings. We reviewed the “learning
Song” and “Feelings Song”. We discussed
curiosity and played a mystery game.
Practicing waiting your turn, not shouting out
were the focus. Kindergarteners learned
about empathy and that it’s okay for others
to have different feelings about the same
things.

One Book, One School
We will be choosing a book for our One Book
One School program. In order for every child
in the school to have a book, we are asking
families to donate what they can. The book
will be unveiled in January and the entire
school will read it then. Thanks!
Sharing Feast
Our sharing feast is Friday, November 20th.
The K-1 classrooms will divide up the
preparation for the feast. We will need each
family to bring in items we need to make the
feast. We will need volunteers to help
prepare the food (on Wednesday and
Thursday) and set up, serve, and clean up on
Friday. The attached sheet has what you
need to bring and a place to volunteer.
Thanks!
