First Grade News June 6, 2014 Mrs. Koransky’s and Mr. Perkins’ class tkoransky@op97.org sperkins@op97.org Wow! It’s hard to believe that the end of the year is only a few days away! Thank you, parents, for all of your support this year. We feel so privileged to have taught your children and witnessed their growth through first grade. We hope you have a wonderful summer filled with sunshine, fun, and relaxation, and also some learning, too! Be on the lookout in your child’s report card for a letter outlining ideas of how to integrate math into your summer. Also, be sure to participate in the Oak Park Library’s summer reading program, which starts next week and goes through August 1. Important Dates: The last day of school is Tuesday, June 10th. Students should dress comfortably because we will be having Hatch’s annual “Beach Day” all morning (fun in the sun without the actual beach), during which the students rotate through game stations. Trimester 3 report cards will go home on the last day. First day of school next year is Monday, August 25 th. Math and Social Studies/Science Update We continued making our math games. Most of us finished making them and we had a blast playing each other’s games! We are working in our Monster Math journals, which are filled with math problems that cover all of the math standards taught this year. In addition to other activities, we will be doing a couple of pages most days to help us review all of our math skills. We wrote math stories in our math journals and had a partner try to find the solution. After discussing the meanings of the words campaign, election, ballot, and vote, we read the book Duck for President in which we followed the campaign trail of a duck. Ask your child how it turned out! We finally are starting to see mealworms turning into the pupa stage! We hope we see a few turn to beetles before the last day. Language Arts Lowdown Thank you to Amy Bergau-Ridge who read a terrific Dr. Suess rhyming book. Dylan did a great job helping to read too! We read a tale from Mexico called The Goat in the Garden about a family of farmers who have a difficult time with a billy goat who is eating all their plants. The students also partner read a story by the famous boxer Oscar De La Hoya called Super Oscar and practiced answering comprehension questions. In group work, the Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks finished reading Flat Stanley and practiced retelling the story to each other. Blackhawks have been working on vocabulary and comprehension questions for each chapter. The Bulls are also finishing up their very own reader’s theatre which they will present to the class.
