A Peek at the Week
Kindergarten Reading and Math: This
week in reading we read two informational texts
called My Librarian is a Camel and On the Go.
We learned about text features (title, heading,
photographs, captions and maps) and how they
help us make better sense of non-fiction books.
We also talked about the main idea of these
texts and recalled key details. In math, we have
been solving math problems and practicing our
counting skills, working on understanding
concepts like greater than, less than, and equal
to. We also have been playing games to help
reinforce our math skills.
First Grade Reading and Math: In reading,
we are finishing up our Treasures Unit 2. We
have been practicing reading, writing about what
we have read, working on new sight words and
reading and spelling words with sh, th, and -ng.
In math we learned two different strategies for
solving addition facts involving 3 addends. We
solved addition number stories and added the
doubles first (2+2+3) or we looked for two
numbers that made ten (7+3+2). We also used a
fun app to solve addition number sentences on
the iPad called Educreations. Ask your child
about this app—it’s free!
Writing: During our writing workshop we are
drawing and writing. We continue to learn about
the six traits of writing (Ideas, Organization,
Voice, Sentence Fluency, Word Choice and
Conventions). We have read many books that
are great examples of many of the traits. We
continue to have fun with great words and we
are beginning to learn about sentence fluency
and how to write a good sentence. The children
have enjoyed using whisper phones to check out
how their writing sounds. Each day we practice
writing.
Science/Social Studies
Many
thanks to Alex Cohen’s mom, Maureen
Spain and her sister, Melanie Spain for
their great presentation about
Australia. We learned a lot about the
continent/country. The children
enjoyed seeing a real didgeridoo and
boomerang.
Health: Hand washing
A student nurse working with Nurse G.
came and talked about the importance
of hand washing. She taught the
children how to wash their hands
thoroughly.
Classroom/School Community Building
In our STAND meeting we talked
about caring for others and showing
compassion when we see that someone
is feeling sad or upset. We role played
different scenarios and modeled what
compassion looks like.
