Family Therapist Job Description Title Family Therapist (For Brent Council’s Inclusion and Alternative Education Service) Reporting to Co-Head of Programme Services for Schools Employer The Anna Freud Centre Salary £35,396pa to £54,393pa FTE, pro rata, plus 6% contributory pension scheme Location Anna Freud Centre, 12 Maresfield Gardens, London NW3 5SU plus various locations in Brent Working hours Part time: 18.75 hours per week Term of contract One year fixed term (in the first instance) The Anna Freud Centre (AFC) As a Centre of Practice the AFC is dedicated to developing innovative and effective treatments and services for children and families. The Centre provides specialist help for children and young people in emotional distress, helping to put them back on track for a brighter future. As a Centre of Learning AFC pioneers training and research dedicated to improving understanding of children and young people’s emotional problems. The Centre is affiliated to UCL with which it offers three master’s degree programmes (one of which is also offered with Yale University) and a clinical doctorate and undertakes collaborative research studies. Overview of the post Brent Council’s Inclusion and Alternative Education Service The AFC has been commissioned to provide clinical input to Brent Council’s Inclusion and Alternative Education Service. The purpose of the Inclusion Support Team is to improve educational outcomes and well-being in children and families by providing input to schools using models backed by research and training. This post is part of a group of four experienced Clinicians, who will offer a clinical service to the multi–disciplinary Inclusion Support Team, and referring schools. The task will be to offer some comprehensive assessments and short term work with a number of pupils with complex needs, contributing to their successful integration and reintegration through a multi-agency approach, and to strengthen skills and competencies in the professionals around them. The team will be supported through clinical supervision. Page 2 of 3 Duties and responsibilities The post-holder will be expected to: Work as a Family Therapist for the Anna Freud Centre, as a member of the clinical team supporting Brent’s Inclusion and Alternative Education Service Participate in and contribute to all activities supporting this post. Provide clinical consultation and supervision as appropriate, with individuals and groups. Liaise with families, social care, schools, the Inclusion Support Team ,and other professionals The post-holder will be expected to: Conduct assessments of referred pupils and families Undertake short term work with a small number of pupils and /or their families Implement a swift engagement programme with these families and the professionals around them. Deliver a systemically oriented service at all levels Participate in team meetings and on-going discussion of clinical work with other members of the team Exercise autonomous professional responsibility based on the code of professional conduct and ethics of the post-holder’s professional body Work within the appropriate child protection, deliberate self-harm, substance misuse and other guidelines, by reporting to and liaising with the team, project leads and external agency staff Keep clinical records and communicate appropriately with clients, referrers and other agencies, complying with the centre’s requirements regarding outcome monitoring etc., and with guidelines on confidentiality and data protection. Where a significant degree of clinical judgment is required about the management of information, with potentially serious legal and clinical consequences, the clinician will be expected to consult with colleagues, including psychiatrists, project leads and the Services for Schools Co-Head of Programme. Adhere to clinical governance guidelines, including keeping up-to-date and accurate clinical records. Service development and evaluation The post-holder will be expected to: Support and develop collaboration with other projects within the AFC, as appropriate together with other team members, ensure that clinical service users, research participants, training users and other key stakeholders have an appropriate voice within the project. Promote the work of the AFC at all levels as appropriate. Continuing professional development The post-holder will be expected to: Ensure the development, maintenance and dissemination of the highest professional standards of practice, through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes, regular professional supervision and appraisal, active engagement with current developments and attendance at appropriate training courses, study days and workshops Attend an annual Review and Development meeting with the line managers, which will include the formulation of a professional development plan and specific details of continuing professional development in relation to the tasks of the post and its development over time Page 3 of 3 Attend recommended and mandatory governance-related trainings including fire and health and safety training and participate in clinical effectiveness activity.
