Planning Officials Development Officer
The Indiana Chapter of the American Planning Association is seeking nominations for
the Planning Officials Development Office (PODO). Per the Chapter By-Laws the
PODO position will be a special election to fill the remainder of the term which is to
expire December 31, 2014. The PODO is a member of the Chapter’s Executive
Committee with the following responsibilities per the by-laws.
Planning Officials Development Office: The Planning Officials Development Officer
shall strive to:








Increase training opportunities for planning officials in the Chapter area,
Create ways of making Chapter and Chapter activities more inviting to planning
officials,
Recruit new planning official members,
Involve planning officials in Chapter programs and decision making processes,
Involve planning officials in planning promotion and advocacy,
Encourage the vital role of planning commissions in providing up-to-date,
responsive and responsible community planning,
Serve as a reference person on planning official resources, helping to coordinate
information and idea exchanges between members and the Chapter and
between the Chapter and APA,
Work with the At-large Representatives to provide general training opportunities.
Strategic Plan Goals for PODO
 Begin research on legislation for professional planning licensure/title legislation
 Begin research on legislation for mandatory continuing education for planning
officials
 Create a marketing and communications and communications plan for the
chapter to communicate a consistent message of good planning.
 Continue to support the “Nitty Gritty” training programs for plan commission,
elected officials and BZA members
 Update the chapter’s “Citizen’s Guide to Planning” and promote the publication to
jurisdictions throughout the State.
The PODO position serves on the Board of Directors for the Chapter and the Executive
Committee. Board of Directors meet on the odd number months and the PODO is
required to attend the meetings.
