PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at SHHS, come to “unlocking the door to financial aid” for college costs.

Representatives from several colleges will be there for an informational session for parents of all ages; learn about financial aid, grants, and opportunities for students.

Kindergarten transition. There has been a proposal to extend the day by 10 minutes. We are unsure of how many kindergarteners there will be yet, so we don’t know if there is a lottery planned. We are still working on transition from TKP to home schools; there is a Q&A is on the district website. Feb. 28 incoming parents will be invited to an orientation.

Thanks for your support of the canned food drive, Guatemala, Haiti

Thanks to Vippy and H&S helping with MLK day. Students really enjoyed the day. Bingo Night,

Movie Night, and Family Fitness night also upcoming.

Direct family donation has exceeded the goal by nearly $150 to date. No amount left in PayPal right now.

We are still in the process of having our tax exempt status approved (1023 form). We are expecting a response by mid-February.

We did purchase the die cut machine for the teacher lounge.

Should Phillies receipt from last year be on Phillies line or in general fund?

Money raised will go to H&S. What is left over will be packed up for Cradles to Crayons.

Book Fair – March 26 – 30 th

Question – why are events always Friday nights? Could be scheduling – gym is used every night.

Perhaps look into doing an event on a Thursday night before a Friday holiday as in February.

TEACHER INITIATIVE:

We do have money in budget to approve each of the following:

Sets of books to use in reading classroom. Set of 51 books, 2 sets of 18 books on phonics. $382.

Goal to improve fluency and comprehension

Wormtopia – worm composting structure. $120 for composting tool. Use the compost in H&S garden

Purchase microphones to attach to document cameras. If put on, can be used for skyping.

Requesting 18 for $195.30. o Motion: to approve all three requests. Motion carries.

K-12 art departments across the district have asked for a piece of equipment to recycle clay – a pugmill. $750. Communications with the other schools is just beginning.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Sustainability

In November, parents donated money so that each of the classrooms could have their own set of reusable cups. Each class has about 30 cups now; teachers did ask and/or were OK with this. Every class reduced trash bags by one bag for each party with this change. Usually the parent will take home dirty cups to wash

Bingo night will again emphasize to bring your own cup.

Involved in Terracycle – scotch paper tape dispensers, Capri sun bags ($130 check received). Big bin in cafeteria to drop off

Third grade has decided for Valentine’s Day to do the reusable plates.

We are getting together Garden Club. Each grade will plant one raised bed during April so that each child will have chance to get in the garden. Will send email to parents for help maintaining, watering, building structures. Contact Denise Disney at denisedisney@me.com

. If Wellness committee wants to plant an early crop, can coordinate with Denise.

Social Studies:

Planning Asia Week during half-days. This year we are studying China. Field trip to University of

Pennsylvania museum and then four other activities, dance, food tasting, slide show. Would love more volunteers.

Need a coordinator for next year.

GRANTS/CORPORATE:

Marple made $527; Marple charges a rental rate per child, per adult. OASIS made $1,060; it is a

100% fund raiser. Prices were recommended by facility based on what other schools have done –

we charged $12 per child. Price might be too high, so we are considering $10 per child per event next year. Lower price may attract more children to come out. Also want to eliminate family amount to keep it simple.

To date we have received $205 on Escrip compared to $137 last year. o Escrip is a program to sign up the Genuardi’s card. Go online to www.escrip.com

and put in your information with Genuardi’s card number. Percent of purchase gets deposited right to

SRS Home and School. Right now, we have about 191 families signed up.

Target money raised with their credit card is deposited with the SRS principal’s fund.

Box top next submission date is March 1. Get them in now for this year.

BOOK FAIR

We have committed to Scholastic Spring Fair and Fall Fair. This year’s theme is Luau, so we will see lots of grass skirts, leis. Details are still being worked out. Will there be a kickoff? Yes, still in discussions; family event

NOMINATING COMMITTEE

We are now recruiting for next year; Katie Crawford and a committee of six are coming up with a list to vote on for executive committee as well as all committee point people. Request will go out in eblast. If interested in any position, let Katie know. All positions are listed in SRS directory.

NEW BUSINESS:

Did we exhaust all silent auction funds? We have a sense is that we didn’t exhaust the funds…could it be in general funds? Sue to follow up.

It is suggested that we consider having a meeting in December or January. Will have this discussion in March. o Motion: to discuss next month. Carries.

If date/time of meeting changes, send out an e-blast to make sure all are aware

Next meeting is 9:30 a.m. on March 14 th . o Motion - to adjourn

Meeting adjourned at 8:35 p.m.

Respectfully submitted

Sharon Graham
