Autumnal attunement – ‘Fall’ - Metal within inspiration and expiration and ‘letting go’ Sadly for some Summer has drawn to a close and with ‘Gusto’, as we are literally seeing outdoors at the moment and feeling the chill of ‘Fall’ and the Winter months ahead. The Yin/Yang pair corresponding to the Metal element and Autumn are the Lungs and Large Intestine. The main functions are breathing, descending and dispersing of Qi throughout the body and regulating water metabolism. The Lungs open out to the nose and control the skin, pores and body hair, whilst the Large Intestine excretes wastes and absorbs water. The emotional correspondences are grief, sadness & melancholy. If we feel these excessively our ‘Yang’ function having been nourished by Summer/Fire and Late Summer/Earth may fail to protect our defensive Qi mechanism and transform cold invasion, dampness & mucous which over time may accumulate and obstruct Qi and blood flow in our channels and organs during these cooler months to come. Aversions to the cold, Autumn and Winter months may indicate a ‘cold type’ or ‘Yang deficiency’ and we may need to tonify our ‘Yang’ by exercise and warming foods like garlic, ginger, onions, black beans, peppers, lamb and chicken and attune to the nature of Autumn - pulling inward, downward, gathering, storing, fuelling up, embracing the warmth on the inner and outer – the ‘yang’ and protect our outer channels of Small Intestine and Bladder from cold invasion by wrapping up, accessorise - necks, shoulders, arms, hands, legs, ankles, feet and keep our butts and Kidneys warm! NB. skimpily clad girls! If there is difficulty in embracing this season then it may indicate that the Lungs need to be cleared of grief and weeping, accumulations of mucous and psychic phlegm, find inspiration within our self worth and find what ‘rocks us’. In the process of inspiration and expiration we are exchanging Oxygen and Carbon dioxide – breathing in heavenly Qi and letting go of toxicity. This ‘return’ or Yang function is paramount for energy – Qi function to the entire organ system, ability to move old negative ways of being, inflamed thinking - inflammations, grievances, transforming stagnations of cold, dampness, mucous, phlegm, excessive acidity, toxicity and heat and blood stasis in the system whilst enhancing our innate Metal element to sparkle, shine and be the gems that we are!
