Spelling and Phonics in Word Study Weekly Tests
Spelling and phonics instruction are in the “Word Work” part of the lesson plan. The spelling words
and phonics patterns are listed on each day of the lesson plan, and the Spelling Practice Workbook
Supports instruction of each lesson. Additional word study activities also support phonics and
spelling instruction.
Students will be tested on the spelling pattern, and will be asked to spell words that use
the pattern, but that they may not have studied specifically. The purpose of this is to ensure
students can apply the spelling pattern to new words rather than memorizing a list of words for the
week. Word study will also include review of previously learned words including “sight words” or
“high frequency words” previously learned for reinforcement. Teachers may also choose to
implement differentiated word study based on student assessment data that indicates a student’s
instructional spelling stage.
