INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN SEQUENCE / PROJECT OVERVIEW A. Planning Overview Subject / Course: Principles of Health Science Topic / Overarching Concept: Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms Description of Project (Summary of the issue, challenge, investigation, scenario, or problem): Disciplinary Core Idea(s) and Performance Expectations: SEPs and CCCs tied to PEs: Grade Level: 9 - 12 Duration of IDS: 7 – 10 Days In this scenario, students will research Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) and determine proper diagnostic procedures and treatment modalities for AAA. In addition, students will determine what lifestyle changes would need to be adjusted for a patient post diagnosis of AAA. Students will then build an interactive model of an AAA to present to a group of health students, medical professionals and parents. LS1.A: Structure and Function Developing and Using Models (SEP) Planning and Carrying Out Investigations (SEP) Structure and Function (CCC) ELA-Literacy/WHST/9-10/7/ Complete Set of Objectives: Students will research the circulatory system and the disease process and diagnostic procedures to determine a diagnosis of an AAA. (S3) Students will build a model of an Aorta with an AAA. (M4) (S2) Students will engage in argument from research evidence as to AAA cause and treatment. (S7, E5) Students will present their finding to the panel. Driving Question: What lifestyle changes are needed for a patient with a diagnosis of AAA? What is an AAA? Other Essential Questions: What are the symptoms of AAA? How are AAAs diagnoses? What are the treatment options for AAA? B.
