Medieval Castles
Directions: Use the Web Quest found under Social Studies Class Projects
titled “Medieval Castles Web Quest” to answer the questions (steps) below.
Follow the steps in order (1, 2, 3, etc). Example: Step 1 on the web
quest is used to answer Step 1 on the worksheet.
Step 1: Castle Introduction
During this first activity you will begin to become familiar with the different
castle structures using Kid’s Castle. Click anywhere on the Castle to explore
and find out more information. Make sure you find the Gatehouse, Great
Hall, and the Great Tower. Once you have located these three areas in the
castle, begin answering the questions for Step 1 on your worksheet.
After exploring Kid’s Castle…
 List one use for Gatehouse:

 Explain what types of medieval people live in the Great Tower:
Step 2: Castle Defenses
In order for castles to stay safe from their enemies, many defenses were
needed and these were often major parts of the castle architecture. Explore
ways castles were built to defend themselves, and then complete the
questions for Step 2 on the worksheet.

 List and explain the purpose of 3 defense features (examplebarbican, portcullis, etc.) added by the castle builders for
protection:

Step 3: Meet James the Jingling Jester
Directions: Press Continue
1. Enter as a new squire
2. Read the Introduction and click on James the Jingling Jester
3. Read about James the Jingling Jester and then click on Let’s Learn More About the
Middle Ages
4. Read the Instructions and then Press Play the Game
5. Read these further instructions and then click on Castle icon at the bottom.
This is a tricky one! When you are looking around the castle you must click on
everything to find out more about it, or you will not be able to answer the questions
fully. Click on things like the scroll and the items in each room to find your answers!
You will not have time to explore this entire site. Take a few minutes to
look around and then locate the Outside the Castle, Armory, and Barracks
pages to answer the questions on your worksheet. These can all be found
on the Map page.
After exploring the different parts of the castle…
 Explain what the lower windows were used for (This information
can be found on the “Outside the Castle” page).
 After visiting the Armory room in the castle (found on the map
page), explain the purpose of this room.
 After locating the Barracks from the map page, explain the purpose
of this area in the castle.
Step 4: Castle Terminology
In order to gain a better understanding of castles, there are many
important vocabulary words to learn. Scroll through and read the list of
castle terms on the site. After looking through the list, go to your worksheet
to find out which terms you need to go back to and define. Click on the
words on the website to go to that word's individual page where you can
find a description and photos.
After scrolling through the list of castle terminology locate the following
terms for further information and pictures. Click on the terms listed
below and define.

Step 5: Famous Castles
Scroll through the lists and descriptions of famous medieval castles.
Click on the links for two castles that interest you. After reading a bit
more about your two chosen castles, list the name and one fun fact for
each.

Step 6: Castle Photo Archive- Welsh Castles
While there are medieval castles throughout Europe and the world, a large
portion of these castles still exist today in Wales, a country included in the
United Kingdom. Explore some of these photos to gain a better sense of
what castles look like, and choose one specific castle that interests you to
use for completing step 6 of your worksheet.
After looking through the many photos of Welsh Castles, choose one that
interests you and list the name, location, and one other fact:
Step 7: Inside a Castle
The inside of the castle was important too! Read about some of the
important parts of the inside of the castle and pay attention to information
about tapestries, the plumbing system, and the Great Hall to answer the
questions for step 7 on your worksheet.
After reading about the inside of a castle, explain some specific
characteristics:
1. What was the purpose of tapestries?
2. What kind of plumbing system did the castle have?
3. What type of furniture was in the Great Hall?
Step 8: Destroying the Castle
Congratulations!!! You have learned all about medieval castles, including
about specific castles, defenses, architecture, and the many important parts
both inside and outside. In order to answer step 8 on your worksheet learn
about destroying the castle and what the trebuchet was used for. When you
are done answering this question you may try destroying the castle on your
own and play the game. If you still have extra time, you may complete
the Medieval Castle Life fun trivia activity.
