三、教學目標 Objectives

The purposes of this course are to heighten understanding and appreciation of, as well as sensitivity to, diversity. Students are encouraged to explore how their own personal values, beliefs, and behavior may limit or expand their ability to understand and interact with people of diverse backgrounds - disadvantaged and oppressed people in particular. Therefore, the cognitive process and sensitivity will be emphasized in order to help students to clarify their attitudes and values dealing with self and others.

四、課程內容 Course Description

●整體敘述 Overall Description

This course aims to provide students with knowledge and/or skills to understand and/or interact with physically, socially, mentally, psychologically, and economically disadvantaged and oppressed people in the times of globalization. Concepts in this course will include ethnicity, culture, gender, minority and majority group, marginality, prejudice, stereotypes (labeling), social stratification, power, inequality, oppression, group and individual discrimination, racism, ethnocentrism, sexism, homophobia, and xenophobia. Additionally, from an empowerment perspective, this course will examine the adaptive capabilities and strengths of disadvantaged and oppressed people and how such capabilities and strengths can be recognized by others.
