Curriculum Night MVEC Core French, Mlle Young, Classroom 146 CYoung@hrsb.ca INTRODUCTIONS Hello! My name is Mlle Young and it is with pleasure that I will teach the Core French curriculum here at MVEC for the academic year; 2015-2016. With the allotted classroom time for Core French, my hope is that students finish the year with a deep respect for our commitment to recognize, pursue, promote and continually progress with our education about bilingualism and diversity within our province and nation; specifically francophone culture and the French language. CURRICULUM Although the curriculum has a specific component to explore French Culture, it has been deemed equally important to teach the students the art of language; more specifically, a second language. This is a challenging element of the curriculum for both student and teacher alike. Integrating simple, rout activities into the classroom routine is one way to provide the chance to communicate in the French language. Providing routine tasks helps to solidify learning and promotes understanding of the basic components of language. Giving vocabulary building activities through the use of simple texts, dictionaries, games, both individual and group work along with minimal handouts, also supports language development. Direct teaching, using visuals and modeling sentence structure enables students to visualize, recognize and identify keys words within a French text that all lead to the comprehension of both the language itself and the meaning of the pertinent text. Language development is different for each individual and progresses at varying rates, thus patience, persistence and effort are all requirements for language learning. The following are the four main curriculum outcomes that will be assessed this year: communication, language, general language education and culture. See below how these outcomes will be a part of our classroom learning. TERM ONE TERM TWO TERM THREE Cope in a classroom where French is the language spoken Follow and give directions in French Recognize and use the vocabulary, expressions, and structures related to needs in the classroom Share tastes, preferences, interests and feelings Share information by using simple sentences/ answer Demonstrate the main idea in a simple text Participate in conversations, games and skits Produce a variety of written texts, following a model Revise and correct their text with a checklist or model Use simple questions for information Interact and cooperate with their peers in French Use images, objects, gestures, and actions to communicate Listen attentively and selectively for information Create connections between oral or written text and prior knowledge SUCCESS An essential key for student success is creating and maintaining a positive learning environment which is the responsibility of every student who participates in Core French. Along with developing skills to communicate in French, students are expected to foster positive attitudes and encourage their peers throughout the year by celebrating individual and collective successes. ASSESSMENT METHODS Students will be assessed on their comprehension and application of the French Language & culture, as well as, communication through various forms: observations, tasks/activities, mini quizzes, sentence modeling visual representations, self-evaluations, portfolios, student-teacher conferences WAYS TO LEARN A SECOND LANGUAGE There are a variety of ways for students to approach learning French as a second language throughout the school year. Some of the avenues are as follows: engaging in conversation, participation, modeling & demonstration, actively listening applying devious and new knowledge, discussions, using new vocabulary, vocabulary building Again, the Core French curriculum used in class allows students to engage in daily conversations through teacher-student and student-student interactions. Basic communication skills are practiced in French through daily and weekly routines. Supporting activities and tasks help to develop language understanding and general language application. Consistent use of reward and point systems help to encourage participation for individuals, groups and as a collective whole are specific to monitoring language comprehension and language use.
