Research Programme Manager Glycosciences and Glycotechnology Research Group National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science Ref. no. NUIG 99-13 The Glycoscience Group in the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Sciences (NCBES) at NUI Galway is a vibrant, multi-disciplinary research group, which focuses on the development of innovative, high throughput analytical platforms and tools for glycosylation and glycan interaction analysis and their application in a wide range of biological samples and research programmes. They have strong collaborative links with several academic research groups in Ireland and overseas and also with key multinational and indigenous companies operating in the Biopharmaceutical, Diagnostics and Food sectors. The Glycoscience Group is funded by awards from the major funding agencies in Ireland and the EU, and from industry. NUI Galway now wishes to recruit a highly motivated and talented Research Programme Manager for the Glycoscience Group. This is a key position with responsibility for the scientific and operational management of the various Glycoscience research programmes on-going in the Glycoscience laboratory, including the NUI Galway-led Alimentary Glycoscience Research Cluster (AGRC, funded by Science Foundation Ireland) and the EUFP7-funded GlycoHIT research programmes. The post-holder will have a strong background in Glycoscience-related research and will have proven capability in managing and successful delivery of research programmes. Working closely with the academics in the Glycoscience group, the successful candidate will assist in the supervision and mentoring of junior research personnel and postgraduate students in the group, in interpretation and validation of experimental data, and in dissemination of project results and outcomes. He/she will also liaise with co-principal investigators and collaborators in other institutions, industry partner representatives, and funding agency personnel. This is a 2-year fixed term contract post. Duties Delivery of Glycoscience Group-led research programmes Provide scientific input into research programmes on-going in the Glycoscience Group Assist in the supervision, mentoring and technical training of junior researchers in the Group Assist in the verification and interpretation of experimental data Assist in the dissemination of research outputs/activities, including identification of the appropriate pathway for dissemination and providing support for preparation of manuscripts and presentations Monitor overall progress of the research programmes towards targeted milestones and deliverables Ensure research programme requirements in terms of documentation of the project activities, milestones, etc. are implemented and adhered to Preparation and delivery of periodic scientific reports for Management Boards, Oversight Boards, Scientific Advisory Boards and funding agencies, as required Financial management of Glycoscience Group research programmes Liaise with funding agencies and ensure guidelines/recommendations are put into effect Manage relationships with Co-PIs, academic collaborators and industry partner representatives Liaise with administrative representatives of partner institutions Participate in performance management and annual review of research personnel performance Ensure project work is performed in line with Health and Safety and other relevant NUI Galway College policies Maintain confidentiality of background IP, foreground IP, and research results emerging from all projects Liaise with the Group’s TTO representative on the identification of and patent protection of intellectual property generated in the work-programme Support and develop applications for academic/industrial/entrepreneurial funding which will enhance and develop Glycoscience research and education in NUI Galway Represent the research activities of the Glycoscience Group as required at local, national and international events (including talks, panel discussions, meetings with funding agencies, industry representatives etc.) Assist with national and international initiatives in Glycoscience, including participation on working groups for new research programmes, research resources, infrastructure, etc. Skills Required PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant area of Biology/Biochemistry/ Microbiology/Biotechnology/Biopharmaceuticals A minimum of 5 years relevant research experience in an academic and/or industry R&D environment, at least three of which were in the Glycoscience field Track record of demonstrable accomplishments in bio-analytical/biopharma and drug development R&D Publication track-record and evidence of extensive technical report writing and presentation skills Clear evidence of project management skills where multiple researchers at various levels at multiple sites are involved.
