Research Scientist in glycan-specific aptamer development
Glycoscience Group,
National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science
National University of Ireland, Galway
Ref. No. NUIG 3-14
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a 1 year, full time position as a
research scientist within the Glycoscience Group, National Centre for Biomedical
Engineering Science at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is available
from 3rd February 2014.
Project background:
The Glycoscience Research Group is actively involved in the identification and
development of novel ‘biomimic’ molecules that can identify glycan molecules with high
specificity. To date, we have successfully described several recombinant antibodies and
naturally occurring protein molecules that can specifically bind to glycan molecules and
more recently shown the ability of DNA aptamers to bind to glycan molecules. We are now
looking to further develop the field of glycan-specific aptamer molecules against glycan
targets
Job Description:
The successful candidate will seek to identify aptamer molecules than can specifically bind
to defined glycan molecules to aid in the development of glycan binding assays for the
identification of these molecules in a range of sample types (cells, purified molecules,
recombinant molecules etc). Excellent facilities and equipment are available within the
Glycoscience Group to support this project. The successful candidate will work closely with
the scientific team and may be involved in the supervision of undergraduate and
postgraduate students undertaking research projects within the laboratory.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should have a track record in a research and development environment
and ideally have a Ph.D. or Ph.D. in prospect in a biological science and have experience in
aptamer development. Experience with glycobiology, molecular biology and binding assays
is strongly preferred. Candidates should have excellent communication and organizational
skills; be highly motivated; and have strong documentation, oral, report writing and
interpersonal skills.
Salary: €22,506 - €37,750 per annum (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new
entrants will apply)
Start date: Position is available from 3rd February 2014.
