2015 Jr. Regional Orchestra Auditions Lake Ridge Middle School 12350 Mohican Road Woodbridge, VA 22192 To: All North Central Virginia Regional Orchestra Directors From: Karen von Bernewitz, 2015 Audition Host and Chair Eligibility (VBODA Manual, page 45): VA students in good standing in grades 7-12 who, at the time of the event, are enrolled in their school and are regular performing members of their school orchestra program (if there is one), are eligible to audition for and qualify to participate in All-Regional Orchestra upon recommendation of their orchestra director. In the event no orchestra program exists, students may be recommended by the band director. Auditions for Junior Regional Orchestra are scheduled for October 3, 2015 at Lake Ridge Middle School. The Junior Regional audition is for 7th, 8th and 9th grade. All teachers with students participating in this event are required to attend and participate in the audition process (see below). Auditions will begin at 8:30 a.m. for violins and 9:00 a.m. for viola, cello and bass. Auditions end when the last student has been auditioned. Please look over the Regional Orchestra section of the VBODA manual so you are familiar with the event. Directors are to arrive by 8:15 a.m. Teachers will be assigned duties and judging assignments which shall begin at 8:30. Note: all violins must audition using the Violin I part. Each student will audition on a prepared piece, “Fantasy on Amazing Grace” by Kerr, the 2 octave A Major Scale, the 2 octave E harmonic minor scale (quarter note = 96, repeat the top note), and a sight-reading piece. Auditions will be tabulated by the adjudicators, and scores will be made available to the teachers. Students who are selected by audition will receive the music from their teacher and have one month to prepare. The Regional Event will take place on November 13 & 14 at John Champe High School in Aldie, VA. Medals will be given to teachers for this event which they may award at the appropriate time. For Jr. Regional Orchestra Auditions, students will register on-line for a designated audition time. This will streamline the registration tables as well as reduce wait times. Friday, October 2, 2015 at 3:00 is the deadline for on-line Registration for Jr. Auditions. All students must register online in advance for the Jr. Auditions. Students will pay the $5.25 registration fee on site the morning of the audition. Teachers will send their “Director’s Financial Form” by Friday, September 18 to Lake Ridge Middle School, Attention: Karen von Bernewitz. This will serve as your commitment to be at the audition site on October 3, 2015 by 8:15 AM. If a director is unable to attend auditions, but will have students present at the audition, a letter of explanation and the name of the designated appointee signed by the school principal and teacher must accompany the designated appointee, or be sent in advance. This letter is due by September 18, 2015 along with the Director’s Financial Form. If a Director plans to pay for all their registered students, they may bring one check along with second completed “Director’s Financial Form” to the audition site by 8:15 on the day of auditions. Please do not send any Student Registration Commitment Forms or money ahead of the audition date. Checks are to be made out to Lake Ridge Middle School. Teachers must have their NAfME membership number when they sign in. If a teacher does not belong to NAfME/VBODA then there is a $123.00 fee payable on site. If a teacher cannot attend this event, then the teacher is responsible for notifying the audition host. It is this teacher’s responsibility to appoint a replacement teacher/adult to represent the participating students. A letter of explanation/appointee signed by the school principal and teacher must accompany the replacement, or be sent in advance. Ideally, the replacement adult should have knowledge of the audition process so that they may participate where needed/assigned. The student registration form includes the following statement: “If a teacher is not present at the audition site the student will be allowed to audition; however the student’s score will not be counted unless the teacher arrives on site.” Emergencies do occur, and these instances will absolutely be taken into consideration for the student’s benefit.
