BALKAN GEOPHYSICAL SOCIETY TO HOLD 7th CONGRESS IN TIRANA
Tirana has been chosen to host the 7th Congress of Balkan Geophysical Society (BGS).
The 7th BGS Congress is the largest and most comprehensive geophysical event in the Balkan
region. The three-days programme consist of a large conference and technical exhibition
providing information on the role that geophysics plays in the realms of geology, reservoir–
petroleum, mining, seismology, geothermal energy, engineering and environment in the Balkan
region.
In all the six BGS Congresses run from 1996 to 2011, 1,062 papers have been presented. Only in
2011, in the congress in Budapest, 142 papers of 397 authors from 15 Balkan countries were
presented. The 7th BGS Congress, which will be held in Tirana in 2013, includes presentation of
research papers (>150 expected to be presented), technical exhibition (reporting the current
progress of geophysics) and a field trip to visit the Albanides, part of the Folded Mediterranean
Alpine Belt. Each Congress has hosted nearly o n e thousand experts from about 25 different
countries.
At the 7th BGS congress in Tirana some 112 research papers will be presented. A technical
exhibition will demonstrate the current progress of geophysics and there will be a field trip to
explore the complex geological formations of the Albanides, part of the Folded Mediterranean
Alpine Belt. The field trip will run between t11 and 12 October, 2013, in the north and south of
Albania. The Congress will be held at Tirana International Hotel.
WELCOME
We are privileged and honoured to host the 7th Congress of Balkan Geophysical Society (BGS), in
Tirana. We believe that everyone is already fully dedicated to this triennial event principally
designed to enhance geophysics. Geophysics is an area of science that integrates geology,
mathematics, and physics in order to understand how the Earth works. The primary objective of
GBS is to secure the future of geophysics. We aim to invest in future scientific leaders and in
innovation, influence properly policymaking with the best scientific advice and invigorate
geophysics and education in the area. In addition, we aim to increase access to the best scientific
solutions. Many of the issues we tackle are global in nature and require collaboration among all of
us and we sincerely support collaboration with young scientists. At each triennial meeting, we
discuss current technologies, as innovation is a means to address sustainable development. The
backbone of GBS is active participation and sincere and concrete collaboration among participants
for the benefit ofsociety. We particularly welcome active and young geophysicists.
We warmly look forward to meeting you at the 7th BGS Congress, Conference and Technical
Exhibition in Tirana, from 7–10 October 2013.

Set up in 5-7 May 1993 in Florina, Greece, during the 2nd Congress of Hellenic Geophysical Union,
the Balkan Geophysical Society (BGS) is a non-profit organization fellowship of the most eminent
geophysicist from the Balkan countries. The idea of setting up such a fellowship run to Prof.
George Sideris, the President of the Hellenic Geophysical Union (HGU) and Dr Dimtcho Josifov,
President of the BGS, during the 36th International Geophysical Congress in Kiev, Ukraina, in
September 1991. In February 1992, run the 9th Petroleum Congress and Exhibition in Ankara,
Turkey. Here, Dr Osman Demirag, President of CGET, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Basokur and Dr Ali Ak
from CGET organized a meeting with Prof. Alfred Frashëri, AGS President and Prof. Pertef Nishani
(AGS member). A letter of proposal concerning the foundation of BGS was drafted and sent to
geophysical societies of the Balkan countries. The aim is to invest in scientific innovation, influence
policymaking with the best scientific advice, and improve geophysics and education in the region.
An agreement was made to found the society between the Albanian Geophysical Society (AGS),
the Bulgarian Geophysical Society (BgGS), the Hellenic Geophysical Union (HGU), the Association
of Hungarian Geophysicists (MGE), the Romanian Society of Geophysics, the Association of
Geophysicists and Environmentalists of Serbia (AGES) and the Chamber of Geophysical Engineers
of Turkey (CGET), all of which are Associated Societies of EAGE. In addition, many other
Associated Societies are members of the BGS. The primary objective of GBS is to secure the future
of geophysics. We aim to invest in future scientific leaders and in innovation, influence properly
policymaking with the best scientific advice and invigorate geophysics and education in the area.
In addition, we aim to increase access to the best scientific solutions
The backbone of BGS is friendship. The member societies are invited to fulfil their
responsibilities and obligations for the BGS. In addition to the aforementioned societies, BGS
consists also of many Associated Societies. BGS is member of EAGE, EAPG, SEG, EAGO,
UNESCO, etc.
Many of the issues we tackle are global in nature and require collaboration among all of us and
we sincerely support collaboration with young scientists. At each triennial meeting, we discuss
current technologies, as innovation is a means to address sustainable development. The backbone
of GBS is active participation and sincere and concrete collaboration among participants for the
benefit of society. We particularly welcome active and young geophysicists.

About Tirana
Tirana is the capital and the largest city of Albania. Modern Tirana was founded as an Ottoman
town in 1614 by Sulejman Bargjini, a local ruler from Mullet. It became the capital of Albania in
1920. According to the preliminary data of the 2011 national census, the population of Tirana
within the city limits is 421,286 and the metropolitan area has a population of 763,634. Tirana's
average altitude is 110 meters (360 ft) above sea level. The city is mostly surrounded by hills, with
Dajti Mountain on the East and a slight valley opening on the North-West overlooking the Adriatic
Sea in the distance.
The oldest discovery in downtown Tirana was a Roman house, later transformed into an aisle less
church with a mosaic-floor, dating back to the 3-rd century A.D., with several other remains found
near a medieval temple at Shengjin Fountain in eastern suburbs. A castle possibly called Tirkan or
Theranda whose remnants are found along Murat Toptani Street, was built by Emperor Justinian in
520 AD and restored by Ahmed Pasha Toptani in the 18th century. The area had no special
4
importance in Illyrian and classical times. In 1510, Marin Barleti, an Albanian Catholic priest and
scholar, in the biography of the Albanian national hero Skanderbeg, Historia de vita et gestis
Scanderbegi Epirotarum principis (The story of life and deeds of Skanderbeg, the prince of Epirotes),
referred to this area as a small village. On 8 February 1920, the Congress of Lushnja proclaimed
Tirana as the capital of Albania which had acquired independence in 1912. Tirana is Albania's
major industrial and financial centre. Since the 1920s, it has experienced rapid growth and
established many new industries for agricultural products and machinery, textiles,
pharmaceuticals, metal products, and lately services.

STUDENT PROGRAMME
The mission of the Congress is to recognise, promote, and support excellence in science and to
encourage the development and use of science for the benefit of humanity. Its priorities emphasise
the impact the young scientists have on science for the benefit of society. Students have the
opportunity to attend short courses, workshops, trial interviews, a geo-quiz etc., on the framework
of Education in sciences. Moreover, they can apply for both the student and technical program but
can only be selected for one.
Short curses & Lecturers,
My Geo Day: Exhibition of contributions with title: How to save the Planet, submitted by children
from elementary and secondary schools of the Balkan countries. The best posters will be awarded!
EAGE and SEG Student Education Program is a good opportunity for the students to attend the
Congress. Travel Grants/Networking bus, an amazing opportunity for students to travel from one
of the Balkan capitals to Tirana and back.
For additional information click on the BGS 7th Congress website.

company representatives. Before the Conference, companies will define time for interview with
selected candidates (on the basis of their CV) during the Technical Exhibition.
SOCIAL PROGRAM
The Social program is a good opportunity to socialize. It consists of presentation of traditional
resources to the participants. Participants have the opportunity to taste amazing Albanian dishes.
Albanian cuisine is surprisingly good and tasty, a mix of Mediterranean and Balkan traditions,
with plenty of fresh fish and produce. Standards are often high, with many members of the
Albanian emigrant Diasporas returning with years of experience in the catering industries around
the world. Dining in Tirana is cheap and even in up market restaurants a main course will not cost
much. Entertainment for delegates and family members will be part of the program, including an
icebreaker reception, a spectacular conference evening and a family member’s tour. Since Tirana
has a lot to offer, we will make sure you will not regret coming to this beautiful city.
The main history and cultural institutions of Tirana are the National History Museum, the
Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Natural Sciences of Albania, the National Theater,
the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet of Albania, the National Arts Gallery, etc., The town is
home to the following natural and historical sites: Skanderbeg Square as a monumental ensemble,
Tirana Castle, the historical core of the capital Clock Tower of Tirana, Et'hem Bey Mosque,
Orthodox Church of the Holy Evangelical, St Paul's Cathedral, the National Library of Albania,
etc. The largest hospital in Tirana is called Mother Theresa Hospital. Tirana is host to many
academic institutions such as the University of Tirana, Polytechnic University of Tirana,
Agricultural University of Tirana, Academy of Physical Education and Sports, University of Arts
