Dear students,
The Build-It-For-You Construction Company, LLC was in the process of erecting a 5-story
building. The building site was located in a remote area outside of South Miami, Florida. Upon
initial digging, a small quantity of human bones was discovered at the site. Digging was
immediately ceased and the forensic anthropologists were called in to try to determine to
whom the bones belong.
You are a part of the forensics anthropology team. Your job is to use a series of equations to
help determine the possible heights of the persons to whom the bones could belong. Then use
your height measurements to determine if some of the bones could belong to the same
individual(s). We have provided you with a chart containing the equations used by forensic
scientists in this determination. Different equations are used for males and females. There
were also a few partial bones that were either crushed or too small to use. So do not be
alarmed if you find that one of the bones stands out from all of the others.
Once you have completed your investigation, please write a detailed letter containing the
procedures you used in determining the gender (sex) and height of the persons as well as an
explanation of why you chose to link the bones to a particular gender and/or height. In
addition, describe any factors that may have limited your findings. We look forward to
receiving your report.
Sincerely,
Skell A. Tonn
