Mathematics
The following activities and language experiences will be used to
engage your child's knowledge, skill and understanding in
English this term:
Writing:
Throughout this term, students will be focussing on the
following mathematical concepts:




Time – reading and converting time, interpreting
timetables and solving problems relating to time
Measurement – choosing and using informal and
formal units of measure for length, area, volume and
capacity
Regular and irregular shapes
Angles – identifying, classifying and making angles
Students will continue to develop their mental computation
skills and will revise strategies including skip counting,
doubling/near doubles, jump strategy, compensation strategy
and split strategy.
Opportunities will be provided for students to further develop
their mathematical understanding and skills, through the
following activities and experiences:






Teacher led discussions
Whole class and small group activities
Interactive whiteboard games
Individual investigations
Partner work
Problem solving
There are two writing cores this term, we will continue ‘writing
to entertain’ and start ‘writing to describe’. They will give
students opportunities to understand the language and
structural features such as:







Quotation marks
Use of paragraphs
Creating complex sentence structures
Writing for a specific audience
Adjectives
Technical terminology
Formal objective style, i.e. first person pronouns and the
writers opinion are not generally appropriate
Students will investigate and view a variety of texts (e.g.
reports, descriptions, newspapers, novels), research a range of
topics and write narrative and descriptive texts (guided and
independently).
In conjunction with the Science Unit being undertaken this
term, students will also have the opportunity to develop skills in
procedural texts, focussing on scientific procedures and
experiments.
Reading:
This term students will be focussing on the reading skills
determining importance, skimming and scanning. They will have
the opportunity to engage with texts in the classroom through:

Assessment
Student progress is assessed throughout the term using work
samples, checklists, written observations and anecdotal notes
and formal tests (e.g. spelling, maths, etc).
All eligible Year 5 students will sit NAPLAN in week 3 this
term.
Reports will be sent home this term and interview times will
be available.
If you have any concerns about your child’s progress, please



Books read aloud by the teacher, including discussions
about reading behaviours and processes.
Shared reading.
Independent reading.
Guided reading groups.
Students will also investigate a range of spelling strategies, word
families, blends (sounds) and spelling patterns within context.
They will also participate in weekly handwriting lessons.
Japanese
Focus of Inquiry (FOI)
This term Year 4/5 students will be learning about matter. This
will cover many of the science concepts. Students will
complete lessons to learn about:




The various properties that materials and objects
have attributed to them
Why products are used based on their properties
Properties can change
The three stages of matter (solid, liquid and gas)
Students will also be consolidating their scientific skills
including graphing their results and determining the fairness
and safety of experiments.
This term, 4/5B has Japanese on Tuesday, 4/5S has Japanese on
Wednesday.
During this term students are continuing their “ichinichi” (All in
a day) unit if work. They will focus on a typical Japanese day,
learning how to tell the time and describe main events during
the day. There will be a focus on cultural and linguistic diversity
through the use of photos, pictures and interactive whiteboard
resources. Hiragana learning will be emphasised with students
expected to recognise and accurately write the hiragana
characters.
Library
PE and Health
To begin with this term, we will be continuing our focus on
throwing and catching from Term 1. After this, we will be
teaching the Fundamental Motor Skills (FMS) relating to
Athletics. These will include running, jumping and throwing.
Students will be learning these skills to improve their ability to
participate in sporting games and activities, including our
Athletics carnival that is coming up this term.
For Health, students will participate in the ‘Bounce Back’
program which engages students in protective behaviours and
social emotional learning. These activities will take part
partially through our Circle Time sessions where we are
focusing on building positive relationships.
All students in years 4 to 6 will also be completing the Rock and
Water program with a specialist teacher. It is a psycho-physical
training program which assists students to become strong
individuals.
This term we are also continuing on with Dance activities, with
students choreographing their own small group dances to
share with pre-school students.
This term, 4/5S borrowing is on Tuesday, 4/5B borrowing is on
Wednesday. All students are able to borrow books at lunchtimes from
1:00-1:30.
During Term 2, students will continue to explore how language
features, images and vocabulary are used to engage the interest
of the audience. They will discuss how characters, setting and
plot are depicted and their personal responses to these. At the
beginning of term, students will be listening to a variety of texts
based around Anzac Day and Gallipoli, before continuing their
study of the Australian author, Tohby Riddle. They will also
investigate the different types of reference books found in the
library and discuss their opinions on using these, compared to
online resources.
Reminders
 This term homework is due fortnightly on Fridays (odd
weeks). Preparation for Rostrum will take place of homework
for the first weeks of this term.
 NO HAT NO PLAY - Students will need a hat to participate
in outside activities as is required by our school sun smart
policy.
