CBS Executive Committee meeting Jan. 27, 2014 In attendance: Steve Theg, Frank McNally, Dean Hildreth, Peter wainright, Susan Keen, Becky Parales, Scott Dawson, Tom Hahn, Mike Turrelli, Gayle Rutledge, Karen Zito, Luca Comai, John Harada Agenda for January 27 meeting of the CBS Faculty Executive Committee 3:10 – 4:30 Room 2002 Life Sciences Presentations by Dean Hildreth CBS 2020 Dean wants to increase CBS faculty to 200, increase of 80 + 20 PSOE lecturers Keep 5 departments with 40 faculty each Consider 6th department: Translational Biology Not just translational medicine eg. Katie Dehesh-biofuels is translational Programmatic areas for faculty hiring Human biology (not just medicine) Quantitative biology Integrative biology (non-reductionism?) Translational biology (not just medicine) 1500 sq ft per investigator need 100,0000 square feet of new space = need new building for 80 new faculty need to add break rooms to old and new buildings because of new lab safety regulations @1000 new undergraduate students in CBS increasing from 5500 – 6500 or 7000 student advisors grow to 20-25 human biology minor with existing courses growth in dept staff, increase in number of TAships establish scientific grant writing team establish college communication team need 100 million dollars propose we raise half, get half from provost Provost is on board with CBS 2020 vision Discussions with provost Funding for faculty startups will come from tuition paid by new undergraduate international students Plan to hire many people with joint appointments in other colleges (like math) Because donors who support endowed professorships like the joint appointment thing. Don’t worry about classroom infrastructure because Provost will take care of this. New integrated science building is already planned James wants CBS space there Chancellor wants: Health, Environment, Food We need to tell her CBS has all that Presentations by Dean Hildreth CRISP (CBS Research Infrastructure Pool) CBS has 24 million dollars of carry forward funds Campus has 150 million (like state parks) Provost is going to take this money if we don’t do something CRISP idea Faculty with non-federal carry forward could voluntarily LEND 10K – 50K to CRISP where it couldn’t be taxed After 2 years, you get your money back College would hire 3 grant writers with the money In the future, contribute more to college wide research infrastructure Money is replaced initially from dean’s million dollar fund Later, from dean’s portion of indirect cost return Provost will allow CBS to have 15% of operating budget in carry forward 24 million is way more than 15% of CBS operating budget CBS is way worse than any other college including med school Discussion of the proposed name change for Genetics major to Genetics and Genomics APPROVED.
