CBS 2020
Dean wants to increase CBS faculty to 200, increase of 80
+ 20 PSOE lecturers
Keep 5 departments with 40 faculty each
Consider 6th department: Translational Biology
Not just translational medicine
eg. Katie Dehesh-biofuels is translational
Programmatic areas for faculty hiring
Human biology (not just medicine)
Quantitative biology
Integrative biology (non-reductionism?)
Translational biology (not just medicine)
1500 sq ft per investigator
need 100,0000 square feet of new space
= need new building for 80 new faculty
need to add break rooms to old and new buildings because of new
lab safety regulations
@1000 new undergraduate students in CBS
increasing from 5500 – 6500 or 7000
student advisors grow to 20-25
human biology minor with existing courses
growth in dept staff, increase in number of TAships
establish scientific grant writing team
establish college communication team
need 100 million dollars
propose we raise half, get half from provost
Provost is on board with CBS 2020 vision
Discussions with provost
Funding for faculty startups will come from tuition paid by new
undergraduate international students
Plan to hire many people with joint appointments in other colleges (like math)
Because donors who support endowed professorships like the joint
appointment thing.
Don’t worry about classroom infrastructure because Provost will take care of this.
New integrated science building is already planned
James wants CBS space there
Chancellor wants: Health, Environment, Food
We need to tell her CBS has all that
Presentations by Dean Hildreth
CRISP (CBS Research Infrastructure Pool)
CBS has 24 million dollars of carry forward funds
Campus has 150 million (like state parks)
Provost is going to take this money if we don’t do something
CRISP idea
Faculty with non-federal carry forward could voluntarily LEND 10K – 50K
to CRISP where it couldn’t be taxed
After 2 years, you get your money back
College would hire 3 grant writers with the money
In the future, contribute more to college wide research infrastructure
Money is replaced initially from dean’s million dollar fund
Later, from dean’s portion of indirect cost return
Provost will allow CBS to have 15% of operating budget in carry forward
24 million is way more than 15% of CBS operating budget
CBS is way worse than any other college including med school
Discussion of the proposed name change for Genetics major to Genetics and Genomics
APPROVED.
CUCEP changes to EVE courses
APPROVED.
Graduate Tuition White Paper – Meeting announcement
