Experimental courses: General Guidelines Experimental courses are intended to help faculty develop new, innovative courses. 1. Proposals for experimental courses should be submitted to the Dean for approval. If General Education designation is being requested, the Dean will ask the Curriculum Committee to evaluate the GE component of the proposal (see item 2 below). Proposals should be submitted early enough to allow time for review. The Dean will notify the Department Chair of the decision on the proposal and will send a copy of approved proposals to the Records Office. 2. If the course is proposed to fulfill a General Education Requirement: a. Identify the specific criteria that the course will meet for the cognate area(s) indicated on the cover page and give a rationale for how the course will meet those criteria. The course criteria for the different cognate areas can be found on the Curriculum Committee web page at the “General Education Curriculum” link. b. Include a completed General Education Assessment Form, found on the Curriculum Committee web page. After approval of the GE designation from the Curriculum Committee, the GE assessment form will be forwarded to the Assessment Committee. 3. An experimental course may be taught at most two times before it must be submitted to the Curriculum Committee for evaluation/approval as a permanent listing in the curriculum and in the Marietta College Catalog. 4. Attach a course syllabus. 5. An experimental course cannot be a required course in a major, minor or certificate program. 6. Experimental courses will be numbered x94. Revised Apr 2010 Experimental Course Proposal Form Please submit to the Provost. An experimental course must be approved by the Provost before the course can be listed in the course offerings.
