MAY BE GIVEN AS OFTEN AS NEEDED:
-If student forgets the task, prompt with Remember to tell me the first sound in the word.
USED ONLY ONCE:
-If student says letter name, prompt with Remember to tell me the first sound in the word, not the letter name.
USED ONLY ONCE:
-If student doesn’t go left to right, prompt with Go this way. (Sweep your finger across row.)
-If student skips 4 or more consecutive letters, prompt with Try to say each letter name.
-If student says letter sounds, prompt with Say the letter name, not its sound.
USED ONLY ONCE:
-If student spells word, prompt with Say the sounds in the word. Immediately say the next word.
-If student repeats word, prompt with Remember to say all the sounds in the word. Immediately say the next word.
USED ONLY ONCE:
-If student does not go left to right, prompt with Go this way. (Sweep your finger across row.)

-Student hasn’t said anything at all, provides limited or off-track response, prompt with Tell me as much as you can about
the story. (May be used only once.)
-Otherwise, prompt with Can you tell me anything about the story? (May be used only once.)
MAY BE GIVEN AS OFTEN AS NEEDED:
-If student starts reading passage aloud, prompt with Remember to read the story silently.
-If student is not working on task, prompt with Remember to circle the word in each box that makes the most sense in
the story.
-If student asks you to provide a word, prompt with Just do your best.
