Tips for Writing a TDA Response

1.

Must be multiple paragraphs o Introduction o Body (1 or more paragraphs may be used.) o Conclusion

**Use Writer’s Checklist

2.

The “flow” of your writing matters. o Be sure to organize paragraphs and details logically. o Use transition words and phrases to help the reader understand your writing.

3.

Cite word for word from the text. DO NOT PARAPHRASE! o Use at least two examples from the text.

4.

Higher level thinking skills are required. o ANALYZING, ANALYZING, ANALYZING!

Evidence = What is it?

Elaborate/Explain = What does it mean?

 Infer = Why does it matter?

Introduction Paragraph

1.

Restate prompt –

Combine words and phrases from the first and second sentences of the prompt.

2.

Transition sentence

3.

Thesis statement –

Focuses on an answer to the prompt using general examples from the passage as well as giving the reader an idea of how your essay is organized.

Body Paragraph(s)

1.

Topic sentence –

Use a transition word or phrase along with one example stated from your thesis statement. Be sure to keep your examples in the same order as you organized them in your thesis statement.

2.

Specific example taken directly from the passage. -

Cite word for word from the passage.

3.

Explain how the text from the passage provides evidence to support the example given in the topic sentence. –

Stated using your own words

4.

Infer –

Elaborate why the example you provided matters to the prompt.

Ask: How or why does this answer the question?

5.

Closing sentence –

Try to restate the topic sentence using different words, but otherwise, use the topic sentence as your closing sentence.
