Solubility Lab
Investigative Question: What is the maximum amount of sugar that can dissolve in 5 mL and 10 mL of water?
Hypothesis: I think ________________________________________ because ________________________.
Vocabulary: When you are unable to dissolve more sugar into a uniform solution of sugar water, we say the solution is ______________________.
Part 1 Procedure:
1.
Pour 5 mL of water into the test tube.
2.
Add 1.0 g of sugar. Using your thumb to cover the opening of the test tube, shake for ONE MINUTE until the sugar dissolves.
3.
Wait another minute, and record observations in data table. If there is sugar on the bottom then it has not all dissolved.
4.
If the 1.0 g of sugar dissolved, add another 1.0 g more. Shake until dissolved. Record observations.
5.
Continue adding 1.0 g of sugar to your water, shaking for ONE
MINUTE until the sugar will no longer dissolve. Record observations.
Volume of water (mL)
5.0
TOTAL Mass of sugar (g)
Did the sugar dissolve? Other observations?
