Job Description
Job Title:
Business Engagement in Early Years – Programme Co-ordinator
Temporary Post (6 month contract)
Location:
Livingstone House, Heriot Watt University Research Park,
Edinburgh, EH14 4AP
Salary:
£24,000 - £26,000
Hours of Work:
35 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 9-5pm)
Job Purpose:
The post holder will be responsible for the successful delivery of SBC’s Business Engagement in
Early Years programme. They will enlist the support of 50 businesses across Scotland, with
particular focus on the geographic areas of Glasgow, Dundee & Angus, Ayrshire and Borders to
deliver activity which will support the Scottish Government’s Early Year’s Framework. This
engagement by businesses will deliver against the Scottish Government’s National Outcomes with
specific emphasis being given to:



Breaking cycles of poverty, inequality and poor outcomes in and through early years
Creating more effective collaborations
Improving employability and life chances
Businesses have a crucial role in supporting appropriate areas of the education curriculum by
providing insight into the World of Work. Business volunteers, suitably supported by SBC will
encourage primary school pupils to become confident individuals who will become active and
responsible citizens.
The aims of this programme are to capture the skills and experience of businesses and their
employees by creating sustainable relationships between businesses and schools in deprived
areas allowing engagement with both parents and pupils who could benefit from access to their
knowledge. They will seek to support children at a crucial stage of their educational development
(Nursery – Primary 4).
The businesses will support schools in disadvantaged areas and will engage with parents from the
school as well as pupils to help both groups move forward in life.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Engage with selected primary schools and their Early Years’ Centres in Dundee, Angus, Borders,
East Ayrshire and North/South Lanarkshire and provide and deliver appropriate business support
and workshops to enable pupils and parents to engage with the World of Work.
Liaise with businesses and teachers to produce workshop content and materials.
Prepare business volunteers to work with school pupils (Primaries 1 – 4).
Hold two events to introduce Early Years’ Improvement Advisors and key staff to business
supporters to create sustainable relationships.
Produce toolkit to encourage long-term engagement between the primary schools, supporting
businesses and Early Years’ practitioners.
Create case studies from both the employers and beneficiaries’ perspectives and communication
of success stories via social media and SBC website.
Carry out evaluation of the programme and write regular progress reports for submission to the
Early Years’ team in the Scottish Government.
