GUIDELINES FOR THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Because of the wide variety of possible internship exposure, it is difficult to design a set of
guidelines that will be relevant in all cases. The joint decision of the intern and his/her field
supervisor will be the final judge of how the internship is to be carried out.
1. The purpose of the internship program is to educate the student in a way that cannot
be accomplished in the classroom. Graceland faculty recognize the importance of
internships in preparing students for life. Internship experiences need to be evaluated,
as do conventional educational experiences. The internship field supervisor should
consider him/herself a teacher-supervisor. After due consideration of the factors in
evaluation, the field supervisor will be asked to evaluate the student, usually on a passfail basis. A form outlining the points for evaluation will be made available to the
supervisor during the internship experience.
2. Interns are required to submit an Internship Plan prior to beginning the internship. The
Internship Plan is to be worked out in conjunction with the field supervisor. The plan
needs the signatures of both the intern and the field supervisor before the internship
can be considered for approval. The plan is an opportunity for the student and the
supervisor to formalize their objectives and expectations for the internship.
3. There is no set number of hours the intern should spend “interning” each day, although
an average of six to eight hours per day would seem a reasonable amount of time. The
intern should expect to work approximately 40 hours for each semester hour of credit.
4. Since the internship is viewed primarily as an educational experience and not a job,
there is no required compensation. This does not preclude any pay to the intern, but
the decision to pay, or not to pay, is left entirely up to the supervisor. We do ask that
where the intern incurs extra expenses such as living away from home, travel, meals
away from home, etc., that some consideration be given to the extra financial burden
incurred by the student. Any such financial arrangements should be agreed to by the
intern and the supervisor prior to beginning the internship.
5. Students working (performing the same job/task) for a past employer do not qualify for
an internship. The internship experience must be a new learning experience for the
intern.
6. Interns are expected to represent Graceland University and to conduct themselves
within the social regulation of the University.

HUMANITIES DIVISION INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS
1. An information form must be complete, signed by the intern, and submitted to the
appropriate faculty sponsor before the internship is approved.
2. A plan of the internship must be completed (with the necessary signatures) and
approved by the appropriate faculty member sponsor before the students begins work.
3. The completed Humanities Division Information Form and the Humanities Division
Internship Plan Form are submitted to the Registrar in order for the student to register
officially for the internship. Copies also must be on file with the faculty sponsor.
4. A reflective journal (not a diary) on the student’s experiences and fulfillment of
objectives must be kept during the internship and submitted for evaluation after the
internship is completed.
5. A P/F grade is not submitted until the student completes all requirements for the
internship, including the field supervisor’s evaluation and the reflective journal.
6. Compensation for work performed during the internship is not to be expected since this
opportunity is as educational one, but if there is some, the amount is left completely to
the discretion of the supervising business/agency.
7. Normally an intern spends from 6-8 hours per day or equivalent interning, but it may be
less time, depending upon the credit given.
8. The internship program may be repeated, but not for the same past employer or doing
the same task(s). The internship must be a learning experience.
9. International students must have the written approval of the Director of International
Programs to participate in an internship. Refer to the International Student Handbook.
10. As representatives of Graceland University, students are expected to act accordingly.
