The Learning Resource Center – Concorde Career College – Jacksonville, FL Welcome to the Learning Resource Center (LRC)! This is your school library. We are a proud member of an international consortium of libraries. In order to help you succeed in your academic and professional work, we have many resources at your disposal: Eight computers equipped with internet access, Microsoft Office 2007 software, and other program based software. Free printing is available for school related printing projects. Access to Books from our reference and general book collection. Access to our academic and general journal collection. Usage of a Virtual Library, giving you access to online periodicals, databases as well as many other resources. Access to a full text medical database Access to books from libraries across the nation. If there is a book you need which we do not carry, your LRC coordinator can usually get it through an interlibrary loan. Access to resources from local libraries. Three study tables where you can study for class, do homework, or work on your research projects. Help with reading, grammar, researching, writing, basic mathematics, general education coursework, study skills, and/or test taking skills. Free tutoring if you are a current registered student Using the Library Library Hours The library is made available to current students and alumni. The library is open: Mondays 7:30 AM – 8:30 PM Tuesdays 7:30 AM – 8:30 PM Wednesdays 7:30 AM – 8:30 PM Thursdays 7:30 AM – 8:30 PM Fridays 7:30 AM – 8:30 PM Saturdays By appointment only Rules of the Library When in the library, students must adhere to the following rules and regulations: 1) Student Sign in is required on the Student Log 2) No eating or drinking of any kind. Water bottles, food containers, drinks, and snacks must be put away and not be visible. 3) No loud conversations. Please keep conversations to a minimum and must be class or work related. 4) No cell phone conversations. Your cell phone must be on silent or vibrate. You must step outside the school building when you answer or make phone calls. 5) No music. If you are listening to music through headphones, please be respectful of others around you and keep the volume low. 6) You must be in your appropriate program uniform. ID badges must be visible at all times. 7) Report All equipment problems to the LRC Coordinator. Do not attempt to fix any of the LRC equipment yourselves. Books/Journals Book Loan Period Current students may check out books from the library (alumni do not have permission to check out books). Library books are loaned for three days. Book loans may be renewed for three day periods and may continue to be renewed. If the loaned book is requested by another student or staff member, the loaned book must be returned to the library by the latest due date. Renewals may be done either in person or over the phone. Failure to return books on time will result in a fine and a hold will be placed on your student records. Reference books and journals will not be loaned. If you need to use a journal article or reference book, you must make photocopies in the library. Reference Materials We have a reference collection that includes journals, text books, dictionaries, and encyclopedias. Reference materials cannot be checked out of the library. Reference books are kept next to the LRC front desk. Please ask the librarian for access to these books. Journals are kept along the wall under the windows. They are listed in alphabetical order. Some journals are program based while others are general journals. If you would like a list of journals kept in the library, please ask the librarian for a copy of the list of journals. Computers Computer Usage Eight computers are equipped with Internet access, run on the Windows XP operating system, and Microsoft Office 2007 software is available along with program specific software. All of the computers are equipped with floppy disk drives, USB ports, and CD drives. None of the computers have CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, nor DVD-R drives. We do not provide wireless access to the Internet. *Please Note: If you need to save your work, you need to use a flash drive, floppy disk, or the work needs to be saved in your email. Any information saved to the desktop or documents folder on the computers is automatically erased on a daily basis. If other students are waiting to use a computer and none are available, the computer usage for each computer will be limited to 20 minutes so that all students are able to share these resources. Printing There is no fee for printing. The printer is located between the journals and computers. You are only allowed to print school and/or work related projects. Please do not print unnecessary materials. If you need help printing or you do not know how to print, please ask the librarian for help. Print paper for the library is limited. Please Note: You may not use the printer to make class handouts! Tutoring Services If you need help in reading, grammar, researching, writing, basic mathematics, general education coursework, study skills and/or test taking skills, please stop by the Learning Resource Center (LRC)! Tutoring is offered free of charge for current registered students! You can speak to the Learning Resource Center Coordinator for more information or to make an appointment. STUDENT HOME PAGE (Use if your student home page has been setup) If you click internet explorer in the resource center, you will automatically see the “LRC Locations Page”. This will take you to your local LRC page. First select your campus The local LRC home page allows you to navigate to Research Links, Departments, Search the Web, Electronic Book Index, Virtual Library, and Local Jobs. (Local Picture). Research Links A compilation of useful links has been setup at this location. If you want to do in-depth research, please visit the Virtual Library Link on the LRC Home Page. Book Index There is a hard copy book index in the LRC which lists all of our holdings by “Title”. This is an alphabetical listing, so it is only useful if you know the name of the book. We have an electronic index which is available from the “Student Home Page” but it is currently being redesigned so it might be unavailable as we work on it. In the meantime if you cannot find a holding, please ask your LRC coordinator for assistance. Gale Resource Library You have complete access to the school’s virtual library from the ten computers in the library and from any computer that has Internet access. The Virtual Library gives you access to electronic journals, videos, program based Internet hyperlinks, and many more resources. This Electronic Tool is a subscription that you would normally pay to use, however as Concorde students you get this service for free. ****Please Note: If you are in the LRC you do not have to Login, however if you need to use the Virtual Library in one of the Labs, you will have to use the following information: URL: http://galesites.com/menu/index.php?loc=miss22358 If you would like to Log on from home, please ask the LRC coordinator to place a shortcut on your flash-drive. This will also enable you to access without a password by double clicking on the shortcut. Periodical Database One feature provided by the Virtual Library is access to thousands of periodicals.
