Year Group Curriculum Overview Assessment Overview 10 The new BTEC Business qualification will allow students to develop a greater understanding of the business environment. Students are encouraged to apply learning and skills in a work related context. This allows the student to become engaged learners and take responsibility for their learning. The skills developed include: This course is assessed by 75% coursework and 25% exam. team working working from a prescribed brief working to deadlines presenting information effectively accurately completing administrative tasks and processes. BTEC Business is designed to motivate and empower learners to investigate the complex business environment and develop their own conclusions. This newly developed knowledge can allow students to progress to university or equip learners for the workplace environment. In year 10, students will complete two units – one core and one optional: Unit 4 - Principles of Customer Service (Sept - Feb) - 25% coursework Principles of customer service (Dec-May) - 25% coursework This unit develops and broadens the students understanding of customer service in different businesses. They develop their knowledge and understanding of customer needs and expectations and are given the opportunity to examine a wide range of different types of internal and external customers. They will also develop an understanding of how businesses set internal policies and procedures to ensure that staff maintain customer service standards. Unit 1 - Enterprise in the Business World (Feb - July) - 25% coursework This unit introduces students to the language and terminology used in business. It explores what businesses do, trends that affect them, how they operate and the factors that influence their success. The coursework assessments allow learners formative feedback as they work towards achieving a defined set of learning aims. The examined unit (Unit 2) will be graded in the same way. The exam is an on-screen test of 1 hour in length. At the end of the course unit scores are aggregated leading to achievement graded as Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction* (equivalent to GCSE grades C, B, A or A* respectively) On successful completion of the BTEC Award, students will be awarded the equivalent of 1 GCSE grade. www.teachmebusiness.co.uk Hours per week: 3 In year 11 they will also complete two units, one optional and one core unit that is externally assessed: 11 Unit 2: Finance for Business (Sept-Dec) – External Assessment In this unit, students will explore the types of costs that businesses incur, from the initial start-up costs involved in setting up a business to the ongoing daily costs of running the business. Unit 8: – Recruitment, Selection and employment (Jan – May) - 25% coursework In this unit students will be introduced to the variety of job roles that exist within businesses. They will develop an understanding of the recruitment process businesses use, they will be introduced to the fact that businesses use person specifications and job descriptions to ensure that they recruit the best people to fill job vacancies. The students will be given the opportunity to complete these important documents for given job roles and will also have the opportunity to complete an application and an interview for a specific job role. They will also consider how to produce their own career development plan. Hours per week: 3 BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Business This is a two year course that once completed is the equivalent of one A Level. Students will study 6 units over the two years, on this course students will have 360 guided learning hours, this will be spread over lessons and private study. 12 What will I learn? In year 13 students will complete the following 3 units: 3- Introduction to Marketing At KS5 pupils can achieve a Pass (equivalent to an E grade at A Level), a Merit (equivalent to a C grade at A level) or a Distinction/Distinction* (equivalent to a A/A* grade at A Level). The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Business consists of 100% coursework and no exams.
