The increasingly popular sale of commercially reared, store condition, ready to
work, bulls from Victor and David Chestnutt. This year’s bulls comprise of seven
Charolais and five Aberdeen Angus.
The Charolais bulls are all similarly bred being from the well proven easy calving
sire “Lissadoair Eden”, the same sire as the last two year’s offerings. The 2016
offering is considered to be the most even batch of superb bulls that he has bred
and would make excellent stock sires for pedigree, suckler or dairy
herds. “Lissadoair Eden” has proven himself in breeding well muscled, thick
cattle and the confidence in his calving ability is such that he has been used on
David’s dairy herd. “Lissadoair Eden” is a grandson of the renowned “Donally
New” (CF52), purchased privately as a calf for £6,000. He bred Dungannon
Champion 2013 and 15 bulls sold to date have averaged £3,080.
The Aberdeen Angus bulls, four of which are by Laheens Jack (by Rossier Eric)
who was bought from Carrick-on-Shannon. He has grown into a huge long bull
and has been used successfully on dairy heifers and the pedigree Angus herd,
proving himself easy calving. Stores sired by him have been sold to 272p/kg last
spring. His first son took Champion at Balmoral Bull sales 2015 and was sold
for 2,500gns. Two of these bulls have been used on heifers throughout the last
year.
These bulls again are commercially reared, not crept fed as calves and fed a silage,
store based diet, which is going down a treat with buyers, who are catching on
that the feeding of bulls to compete in club sales inhibits their ability to work and
shortens their life span.
A pleasing aspect of last year’s sale was the amount of repeat custom or
neighbours of farmers that have used previous Bushmills bulls and hearing of
good batches of store cattle making top prices at store sales.
The herds have recently completed clear tests for TB & Brucellosis, bulls are
vaccinated for Lepto and BVD and were all tissue sampled for BVD at birth with
no Pi’s ever identified on the farm. The herds have never seen a case of Johne’s.
