Project Title North Korea and the United States Congress: Evidence based policy? The studentship holder will: 1) conduct research on the relationship between the US Congress and United States foreign policy relationship to United States policy towards the DPRK since the end of the Cold war 2) evaluate the issue of objectivity, bias and perception in foreign policy-making and implementation using relevant theoretical literature Project Description The subject is of theoretical, empirical, interest and public policy in that the debate about the veracity of evidence in relation to the study of north Korea has rarely been systematically analysed, not in terms of factual accuracy, but in respect to epistemological and sociological issues about the construction of knowledge. The study has the potential to improve understanding of how US policy to North Korea changed and why - but also to help us understand how foreign policy is made in democracies more generally and the role of perception and bias in the process and outcomes of foreign policy-making. NB The International Institute of Korean Studies UCLAN (IKSU) has been newly as a multidisciplinary hub of research, teaching and public policy in the study of contemporary Korea. IKSU research expertise draws on SoLLIS and UCLAN wide research expertise in the context of East Asian security, Korean language, Korean traditional music, sport and the society, economics and international politics of North Korea. IKSU is developing exciting new social science in North Korean studies and ‘Global Korea’ and work with international academic and public policy partners in South Korea, China, Russia, Japan and the United States. The PHD candidate will work closely with Professor Hazel Smith.
