MISSION PRAYER
Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of the living God,
Teach us to walk in your ways more trustfully,
To accept your truth more faithfully
And to share your life more lovingly.
Inspire us by the power of your Holy Spirit for
Mission within our parish
So that your name may be made known
and that all may come as one family
To the kingdom of the Father,
Where you live for ever and ever. Amen

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON
Listen, Lord, and answer me. Save your servant
who trusts in you. I call to you all day long, have
mercy on me, O Lord.

24:1-2.15-18
RESPONSORIAL PSALM 33
Taste and see that the Lord is good.
2nd Reading: from the letter of St. Paul to the
Ephesians (Ephesians 5:21-32)
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Alleluia, alleluia! Your words are spirit, Lord, and
they are life: you have the message of eternal
life. Alleluia!
GOSPEL: John 6:60-69
COMMUNION ANTIPHON
Lord, the earth is filled with your gift from heaven;
man grows bread from earth, and wine to cheer
his heart.
Today's readings tell us of three instances in which people
needed to make important decisions; in the first instance, the
children of Israel decided that Yahweh would be their God. In the
second reading, Paul touches on the decision married couples
are constantly called on to make - to really love each other as
Christ loves his Church, or to live together in some kind of
peaceful coexistence. Finally there is the choice the followers of
Jesus made when others turned away.
Joshua 24:1-2,15-18. This passage relates to a very ancient
Israelite tradition and probably relates to an agreement entered
into by the Israelites and the inhabitants of Shechem whom the
Israelites had invaded and conquered.
Ephesians 5:21-32 Here St. Paul describes, brilliantly, what
Christianity ought to be in human life. He uses the love of God, as
revealed in Jesus, as an example of how to transform the way
humans relate to each other.
St. John 6:60-69 For many, the cross roads had been reached;
this last assertion by Christ that "he was the bread of life" and that
they "must eat his flesh and drink his blood" was the last straw.
The decision to stay with Him rested heavily on the Apostles; and
Peter spoke for all.

FEASTS OF THE WEEK
24th August – St. Bartholomew, Apostle
We know little about this Apostle, save that he was
numbered among the Twelve. Scholars believe he is
identical with Nathanael of the gospel. He was a
native of Cana and was introduced to the lord by St.
Philip. According to legend he preached the Gospel
in India and there suffered martyrdom.
27th August - St. Monica
St. Monica was born in North Africa about A.D. 331.
Gentle, patient, persevering in prayer – she obtained
for her pagan husband and licentious son (young
Augustine) the grace of conversion.
28th August – St. Augustine
Today is the Feast day of Monica’s son. A great
philosopher, theologian, orator, pastor and man of
God. Augustine in his book of Confessions, told us
everything about himself until his final conversion and
total commitment to Christ. He died in 430 and is
revered as one of the greatest Fathers of the Church.
