Specific Lesson objectives
Success criteria
1. To introduce students to the concept of a
mixture.
2. To introduce definitions of key terms, including
pure, impure, atom, element, compound and
mixture.
The students will…
1. Recall that a mixture is a combination of more
than one substance in no fixed proportions.
2. Recall the meaning of the terms pure, impure,
atom, element, compound and mixture.

Learning Activities
Connect (connect the learning to previous work/remembering/bigger picture/motivate) 10 – 15 mins
1. Bring students into the classroom and mark the roll.
2. Introduce them to the new unit called Separating Mixtures. Put up the Powerpoint slide with a list of
mixtures and pure substances all jumbled up and give each group a sheet of A3 paper.
3. Ask each group to draw up a table with two columns: Pure Substances and Mixtures. Get them to write
down the names of each substance in the column in which they think it belongs.
4. Discuss the class’ results – get the students to explain which column they put it in and why.
Activate (new learning) 10 – 20 mins
1. Show the Clickview – Separating Mixtures and get students to fill in the cloze action sheet while they
watch.
Demonstrate (applying learning: individual/group/pairs: learn by doing; present/show; share learning)
15 – 30 mins
1. Give each group a set of the terms and definitions printed on cardboard. The students then have to work as
a group to match the term with its definition.
2. Discuss the definitions as a class. Ask the students to write down the definitions in their notebooks.
Consolidate (Plenary/creation/analysing/evaluating/extending/Homework; review - recall & retention)
15 – 30 mins
1. Teachers circulate - review work & sign off completion
2. When finished definitions work...
