College Prep English 9 Ms. Hinko phinko@paulvi.net Supplies Needed: 1 inch binder including dividers Composition notebook Loose leaf (in binder) Pencil or pen Textbooks: The Language of Literature: World Lit published by McDougal Littell Vocabulary Workshop: Level E published by Sadlier A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare (prefer the Folger Shakespeare Library edition) Night by Elie Wiesel Grammar for Writing published by Sadlier-Oxford Expectations: Arrive on time Be prepared for class when the bell rings Complete all of your work to the best of your ability Be respectful to your classmates, your teacher, and God Grading: All assignments will be graded on a point scale ranging from 10 to 100 depending on the assignment. Homework: Between 10 and 25 points depending on the assignment In-class work: 15 points each Quizzes: Between 25 and 75 points Tests, projects, and papers: 100 points each Binders: 50 points Journals: 50 points total (5 points per entry – 10 total entries) 1 Homework: Homework will be given every night. On the nights where the student does not have written work but must read, they should expect an in-class assignment on the reading the next day. All homework should be typed and turned in at the start of class. Late homework is subject to a grade reduction or the possibility of it not being accepted at all. In- Class Work: In-class work will be frequent and must be completed during class. In-class work includes but is not limited to, in-class writing, note taking, and pop-quizzes. Not all in-class work will be graded. If in-class work is missed due to an excused absence, the student can make it up at home. The only exception is pop-quizzes. In this situation, the student will be exempt from that grade. Quizzes: Quizzes will be given periodically. Depending on the length of the unit depends on if there will be a quiz. Students will be given at least 5 days notices of when a quiz will take place. Students will be notified as to the format of the quiz at this time as well. These quizzes will also include vocabulary quizzes which will be given on every “A” day. Half of the vocabulary quiz grade will be the completion of the corresponding unit in the vocabulary book which is due on the previous “R” day. Tests, Projects, and Papers: During the quarter, a combination, to equal at least 3, of tests, projects, and papers will be given. Students will have at least 7 days notification as to the test date and will have at least 10 days to work on projects and papers. Students will have a study guide for tests and rubrics for projects and papers. Binders: Students will keep a binder that is only for English. They will keep handouts, notes, returned graded work, and in-class work in their binder. At the end of each quarter, students will turn in their notebooks by 3pm on the end of quarter testing day for English even if they drop that day. 2 There will be a sample binder, along with a list of what should be in the binder, in the classroom. The only thing that will not be in the binder is the student’s journal. Journals: Every student will keep a journal. The journals will be due every Monday at the start of class, unless the class drops then they will turn it in on Tuesday at the start of class. At least one entry will be due a week. The students but have a total of 10 by the end of the quarter which means some weeks they should do extra entries. It is up to the students to choose which weeks they will do extra entries. See the journal handout for more information. Plagiarism: PLAGIARISM OF ANY KIND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED! Please see the section on plagiarism in the student handbook or refer to the plagiarism handout on what constitutes plagiarism. Google Docs: Every student must sign up for a Google account so that they can participate in Google Docs. A section for each individual class will be created and the student will enter into their corresponding class. More information on how to sign up for and use Google Docs will be provided later.
