Willow Road PTA Meeting Minutes
June 9, 2015
Welcome
Approval of Minutes: Mrs. Palazzolo & Marlana Romano
Treasurer’s Report: The opening balance on June 1 was $24,121.85. The income in May was $16,926.00. The
expenses for that time were $17,272.54, leaving a balance of $23,775.31 on May 31 plus the $500 in savings giving
us a total of $24,275.31.
Correspondence: The PTA received thank you notes from the 3rd grade teachers, 6th grade teachers, the 5th grade
teachers, Mrs. Higgins, Ms. Cicco, Mrs. Lodato, Mrs. Mendes and Tina from the front desk for the wonderful
luncheon. Mrs. Vitalo sent a thank you note for remembering her during Nurses’ week. SEPTA sent a thank you for
the donation we gave them for the scholarship fund.
Administrative Report: Ms. Capozzoli thanked the PTA for their generosity throughout the year.
The Kindergarten children are practicing for moving up ceremonies. The 6 th graders are getting ready for
graduation, which will be held at the Elmont Public Library. The Talent show was stupendous. The teachers may
have supervised, but the children did it on their own. Everyday has been a joy to be with the children.
We are hiring new teachers, and they have been coming in to do a demo, and are all in awe about how courteous
and respectful the children are.
So far we have 80 children registered for Kindergarten next year. That number will double over the summer. We
will have 6 kindergarten teachers and 3 fifth grade teachers next year. There might be a few changes for next year,
but mostly it will be the same. The teachers will be making the classes for next year.
We will pilot a new Special Ed program in which 2 teachers will be with the children all day and the aides will be
there during lunch and specials. In the inclusion classes the extra teacher will be there for 3 blocks instead of 2. In
Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd they will be getting Math Focus. The 5th graders will be getting a new Social Studies book.
We will be testing Super Kids, which is an all-inclusive literacy program that follows the common core. This will be
for the Kindergarten to the 2nd grade.
The blacktop will be worked on over the summer.
Summer Rec will be held at Willow this year.
There were not too many trips this year because BOCES was not able to pay for the buses that they normally
would pay for. The buses for the trips are very expensive. Instead we had the trips come to us, like Erik’s Reptiles
came to the school for the children. The teachers decide if the class will go on trips. The PTA is not allowed to fund
class trips. The cost would be passed along to the parents, and we cannot assume all parents can afford the trip
money.
Thank you for passing the budget. Have a wonderful summer.
Committee Reports:
Preschool- The bus ride went well. We had 32 children come. The Physical Ed, Math and Reading teachers helped
out. Next year the visitation will no longer be on a Friday, we are looking to have them on Tuesday or Thursdays.
Book Fair- Half price sale is still going on, so far it is doing very well.
SEPTA- The last meeting of the year is Wednesday 6/10 7:30PM at Memorial. They will be handing out next year’s
schedule.
6th Grade- The kids are getting ready for the bagel breakfast, the school dance and graduation.
High School- School ends this week. The regents and finals will take place the next 2 weeks. Mr. Odell will be
moving to the district office. Next year we will welcome the new principal Mr. Bolen.
Teacher Staff Luncheon- a good time was had by all. Thank you to everyone who donated the desserts. Mrs.
Higgins won the raffle picnic basket.
PARP- Next year instead of handing out paw prints, the kids will hand in the calendar at the PARP store.
Installation Dinner- Everyone had a great night, the food was awesome. If you did not get a favor contact Joanne
Naumov, she has extras.
Interschool- The Meet the Candidate night went well. The Fantastic Four Volleyball game was exciting.
Congratulations Willow on the big win.
New Business:
Next year we are looking for new fundraiser ideas. The gift wrap sale we will be looking at a different catalog.
Maybe consider doing a pie sale around Thanksgiving time. We would like to have a special person dance. Please
let us know if you have any ideas.
Next year we will have 2 day field day. One day will be for the 1st grade to the 6th grade, one day for the
kindergarten, hopefully we can have a DJ.
Please sign up in the pink book to help.
Have a wonderful summer!
Meeting adjourned.
