Title: Gallery Goers Go to Kohler Art Center
Description: Gallery Goers is a group of approximately forty (40) middle school students in grades 5-8 whose purpose is to create and experience art in a variety of settings. Students who become Gallery
Goers are selected based on their interest and talents in the area of art. Gallery Goers was founded in
2010 with the goal of increasing exposure of real-life art experiences for rural students. Due to the location of Medford, many of our students’ exposure to historical and master artist galleries are extremely limited. With the nearest art gallery almost three (3) hours away, our students are often restricted to virtual gallery walks. Therefore, Gallery Goers was created to expose our students to as many different artist ideas as possible, and encourage their creativity by having the students experience at least one real-life gallery tour a year. This year (2013-2014), the Gallery Goers have chosen to attend the John Michael Kohler Art Center.

A trip to the John Michael Kohler Art Center in Sheboygan, WI, which is approximately 200 miles or 3.5 hours from Medford, would cost $2,800. Of that total cost, $1,200 would be spent on a bus for forty
(40) students and five (5) chaperones, and the remaining cost would be spent on a $40 entrance fee for students.
If approved, the WAEA Potawatomi Grant would be applied to the bus costs. Fundraising dollars in the amount of approximately $1000 would be used to cover the remaining bus costs and partial entrance fees for students. Currently the Gallery Goers is completely self-funded and holds multiple fundraising activities throughout the year, such as selling popcorn at band concerts and holding bake sales at other school functions. Depending on the amount raised through fundraising, the students would be required to pay approximately $20 toward their trip. If a student is unable to pay, due to extreme financial circumstances, arrangements would be made to provide a scholarship for that student.
Students in Grades 5-8
The mission of Gallery Goers is to expose our students to as many different artist ideas as possible and encourage their creativity by having the students experience at least one real-life gallery tour a year.
This ideal fits with the mission of the Wisconsin Art Education Association, which is to promote excellence in visual art and design education for all students by offering lifelong learning opportunities.
In addition to matching the mission of the WAEA, Gallery Goers provides students the opportunity to fulfill the Wisconsin State Art Standards, most specifically standard: J. CULTURAL AND AESTHETIC
UNDERSTANDING: Students in Wisconsin will reflect upon the nature of art and design and meaning in art and culture. As part of the experience to the John Michael Kohler Art Center, students will have an opportunity to reflect and create a piece of art based on what they’ve learned and seen, so that they can share these ideas and pieces of art with their Gallery Goer teammates, their classmates and their families. It is also our hope that these students will be inspired by what they see and experience in the galleries and those ideas will manifest itself within their art works now and in the future.
Beyond the gallery experience, activities by the Gallery Goers also cover other Wisconsin State
Standards and WAEA mission by creating art after school to be displayed during a student-led art show, and by coordinating a parent’s night where students and their parents work on family art projects together. These activities encompass WAEA’s mission to “showcasing student talents and abilities.”
These activities also cover the WI State Art Standards of C: VISUAL DESIGN AND PRODUCTION: Students in Wisconsin will design and produce quality original images and objects, such as paintings, sculptures, designed objects, photographs, graphic designs, videos, and computer images.

Following the trip to the John Michael Kohler Art Center, students will be required to complete two assignments:
(1) Reflect on your experiences during the gallery tour by choosing at least one piece of artwork that struck your imagination or curiosity. Explain in your own words why you chose this piece of artwork.
(2) Using your chosen piece of artwork, research the artist that created it, and try to find out as much information of what inspired him/her to create it. Then using this information, create a piece of artwork using your chosen piece as your inspiration.
