Requirements for Good Teaching Good teaching requires some basics that a teacher should follow to achieve the main goal of teaching. Scientists of education have mentioned different methods for good teaching. In this article, we are going to mention good teaching requirements that were specified by Professor Richard Leblanc ,from University of York , who was awarded the Seymous Schulich Award for Teaching Excellence: 1. Good teaching doesn’t mean only encouraging students to learn but teaching them how to learn. Each student must know the methods of teaching and how to search for the information. 2. Good teaching is achieved when considering students as knowledge consumers. Students must receive the information and get the most benefit from it at the same time. Therefore, teachers should have great knowledge in different fields by searching new sources of information either inside or outside their area of expertise and try to use the teaching theories in the class. 3. Good teaching is achieved by having good relations with the students. Keeping in mind the individual differences between the students . Encourage quiet students and try to exploit the energy of active students. Teachers should push students to excel in many fields. At the same time, teachers should respect students and be human and professional with them. 4. Good teaching doesn’t mean that the teacher follows a specific plan but to be flexible and have the confidence to deal with any sudden circumstances in the class. Good teaching means to create new methods better than the existing ones. It means creativity. A good teacher should have the ability to cooperate with the students’ circumstances and at the same time achieve the goals of teaching. 5. Good teaching means that the teacher should be the leader of the orchestra and each student is a member in the orchestra and plays a different instrument and in a special skill. The teacher leads the students and the class. A good teacher interacts with the students and listens to all the different point of views. 6. Teachers should have a sense of humor. The teacher should be flexible. He should not be strict all the time . The lesson may include some funny or strange ideas that may attract the students’ attention; so that they won’t be bored. 7. Good teaching means caring and developing talents and ideas. Teachers should have a specific time to listen to the students and discuss their ideas. Moreover, a good teacher should be able to design new syllabuses that suit the students’ levels. 8. Good teaching requires good leadership with clear vision that includes plans for everything that follows this leadership as personnel, faculties and funds. 9. Good teaching is about supervising all the faculties and trying to organize the work between them and concentrate on the strategy of team work. Moreover, the management should reward effective teaching and try to improve poor teaching by preparing special training courses. 10. Good teaching is achieved by a teacher who chose this career because he enjoys teaching not because of financial reasons or because he couldn’t find the alternative. A good teacher sees himself only as a teacher and not anything else.
