The Scheme

The Griffith University International Workshop Awards are designed to assist Griffith University academic disciplinary leaders to conduct workshops to further develop pre-existing research linkages with colleagues at key international universities or research institutions. It is expected that such linkages will lead to the development of increased participation in long-term major international collaborations or assist in the development of international research networks.

Workshops should aim to bring together researchers from Griffith University and targeted international organisation(s) to exchange ideas on the development of research linkages. Workshops will identify or develop collaborative research projects and potential external sources of funding to enable the projects to be progressed.

Eligibility

The Griffith University International Workshop Awards must be convened by full time, senior, Griffith

University academic staff (Level D or E, or equivalent), who are active researchers within one of the

University’s Research Centres or “Areas of Strategic Investment”. The workshops must have the support of the relevant Head of School or Research Centre Director with the convenor demonstrating that they have the time and ability to successfully manage the workshop. Workshops must be attended by high profile international academics or research institute staff from targeted international institution(s).

Terms and Conditions

Funding available: up to $10,000 per workshop with further contributions from the relevant Research

Centre desirable. Funds can be used for the proposed workshop only (including economy class airfares, accommodation and subsistence for international collaborators and direct workshop expenses). Funds may not be used for conference attendance.

Workshops are to be held at or in close proximity to a Griffith University campus.

Reporting: A comprehensive report on the outcomes of the workshop is due within three months of the workshop being held. A further report on the progress of the international linkages with the participating institutions must be completed 12 months after completion of the workshop. Reports must be endorsed by the relevant Centre Director or Head of School

Incomplete, late or previously unsuccessful applications (where these have been resubmitted unchanged) are likely to be ruled ineligible.

Assessment Criteria

Excellence will be the primary criterion. The selection committee will consider:

The profile of the international collaborators as determined by their track records and the international standing of their research institutions (30%).

The strength of their existing collaboration, or the potential to develop a major collaboration, and the likelihood of benefits to Griffith University including the establishment and/or continuation of a longterm major research collaboration, funded by external funding sources and leading to high profile joint publications (30%).

The profile of the Griffith University academics involved, as determined by their track records (20%).

The quality of the proposed workshop and intended outcomes of the research collaboration (20%).

Applications that seek to leverage external international collaborative schemes (eg. DIISR International

Science Linkages, ARC Linkage International, or similar), may be given priority over otherwise equally ranked applications.

A letter of support will be required from the in ternational collaborators’ institution.

Applications will be reviewed by the Group Deans Research and/or delegates.
