Name__________________________________________ Period________ Jip, His Story Newspaper Final Project In groups of 3-4, you will create a newspaper for Jip’s hometown in Vermont. All group members will work together to create an original, creative, professional-looking publication. All parts of your newspaper should relate to the time period of the novel (the 1850s). Each group should come up with an original name for your paper on a masthead. Your paper must be 4-6 pages in length. Each article must contain a headline and a byline (classified and advertisements do not need a byline). Have fun and be creative Your paper should contain the following: News Stories: At least one major national story, at least two major stories relating to the events in Jip, His Story, and appropriate photographs and graphics. Obituaries: A list of everyone who died at any time in the novel, as well as, a description of how they died, what family members they left behind, and a little information about what they did in the community. Classifieds/Advertisements Page: A list of things for sale, announcements, and services offered in the community, events coming up, etc. Everything that you put in the classified section should relate to someone, something, or some place in Jip, His Story (i.e. a bake sale to benefit the schoolhouse or an ad for Mrs. Wilken’s tailoring business). The more items you can think of to put in the Classifieds, the better. Editorials: At least two letters of personal opinion to the editor on topics relevant to the 1850s or events that take place in the novel. They can be on the same topic or different topics. Miscellaneous: Any additional articles you may want to include relating to the novel, including a weather report, an advice column, a gossip column, lifestyle articles (fashion, food, entertainment related to the times), and photographs. Each group member must write one of the news stories or editorials for the group’s newspaper. See rubric for grading information.
