Admission Information
Respiratory Care Program
Prerequisites:
1. High School diploma or GED (college transcripts can also be
submitted for transfer of applicable credit).
2. High School or college course in Physics (preferably PHY 110), Biology, and
Chemistry (within 6 years of application date) with grade of C or better.
3. Scores on the COMPASS™ test indicating:
a. Readiness for college level English (ENG 101).
b. Math ability: readiness to take algebra or statistics
4. Overall GPA of 2.75
Note:
After submission of an application the college, a high school transcript and college transcripts (if
applicable) and the COMPASS™ test scores, your file will be reviewed. The College will notify
you in writing of your admission status and assign you an advisor. We request that you meet
with your advisor prior to scheduling classes.
FYE:
FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE must be completed before the student completes 12 credit hours.
CLASS STARTS: Technical sequence starts every Fall Semester. The class for fall 2014 will be selected
through the progression process. The progression process will begin January 1 2014 and
close Feb 15th, 2014. Students will be notified no later than March 15th. Meet with a
Respiratory Care advisor for details and check your Cincinnati State e-mail for updates.
Basic science and non-technical courses may be taken prior to taking your technical
courses. These courses are offered both day and evening.
Technical courses are offered during the day only.
LENGTH OF PROGRAM:
22 months, Associate of Applied Science Degree

STARTING PAY RANGE:
Approximately $37,500 - $45,000 annual salary

courses as stated in the catalog).
$20,400– approximate tuition for out-of-state resident (taking exact courses as
stated in the catalog).

RESPIRATORY CARE PROGRAM
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION

Dear Applicant:
The following essential functions are required of all students enrolled in the Respiratory Therapy Program.
Respiratory Therapist are responsible for the care of patients some of who are critically ill. They are often required to
manage highly complex pieces of equipment, as well as interact with patients in order to make other therapeutic
assessments. Therefore, in order to be successful in the Respiratory Therapy Program, all applicants should be able to
perform, or learn to perform, the following essential functions:

Mechanical, electronic, and computer skills
RESPIRATORY THERAPIST work with:

Life supporting devices, such as mechanical ventilators

Computerized instruments that perform a number of tests at the same time

Specimens of blood, cells, and other body substances which may be infectious




You are likely to face the following physical demands as a Respiratory Therapist
1. Spend much of the day traveling between patient rooms, various patient care areas,
and the Respiratory Care Department. Most clinical days are 12 hours long.
2. Move and position bedridden patients
3. Perform physically demanding procedures such as chest physiotherapy and chest
compressions.
4. Possess sufficient auditory perception in order to hear normal levels of speech of
patients and staff, assess patient care needs by the use of devices such as a
stethoscope, and respond to alarms.
5. Possess sufficient visual acuity so as to accurately measure medications, read patient
records, evaluate information displayed on patient monitors, and make observations of
patients as required for Respiratory Therapy.
6. Manipulate small pieces of equipment and perform complex skills such as arterial
puncture and endotracheal intubation.
7. Apply sufficient intellectual and emotional skills in order to plan and exercise independent
judgment for patient care, and to respond quickly to medical emergencies.
