Mental Health and Wellness Committee
Meeting Nov 21, 2013
In attendance: Sarah Field, Janice Wells, Deanna Durnford, Melissa Randell, Bob Davies, Caroline King
Introduced Melissa as new Chair! We are very excited to have Melissa as chair.
Bob Davies explained the “Comprehensive Guidance Program”. Is this something we want to implement
at Basinview? Bob explained that we can implement portions of this program based on the needs at
Basinvew. Do we want to implement this for grades 4-6 or maybe just grade 6? Maybe we bring a few
former students who are now in grade 7 to come back and talk to students. Bob explained we can adapt
this anyway we like. We will discuss further at the next meeting. Sarah will chat with grade 6’s in her next
girl talk session to see if this is something they might be interested in?
Caroline King: Caroline had lots of wonderful information to pass along:
sidewalk update: Caroline informed us Anita Copeland would be the contact person for this. She
suggested that we plan a “walkabout” and walk with some students and local councillor and mla to the
new CPA location. Caroline will spearhead and start emailing the necessary people to set up a
walkabout.
She also told us about the making tracks program. Someone would come to the school and talk to
students about safe modes of transportation (walking, biking, skateboarding). She will find out how
much it would cost for biking, walking and scootering (making tracks) program.
Hands up Survey goes to teachers and kids raise their hands to say who walked to school etc (have to do
survey for a week). Janice said teachers were very busy this time of year and suggested maybe we do
this in the new year or the spring.
One Step Program through Heart and Stroke foundation. This sounds like a great program that we would
love to take advantage of. The study determined girls between gr 4-8 are the least active. The program
gives students pedometers and encourages physical activity. We are very interested in making the most
of this program. We will table until the next meeting.
Girl Talk-update from Sarah: Sarah has to prepare a report to go back to community health board to
explain where grant money was spent. Melissa said she would help her with it.
