POSITION DESCRIPTION Elyria Public Library System An Equal Opportunity Employer ____________________________________________________________________________________ Job Title: Library Technician II Public Service Desk Immediate Supervisor: Circulation Manager Positions Supervised: None FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: This is an intermediate level clerical position within a department. Provides necessary clerical support for department and may provide training and assistance to lower level technicians. ESSENTIAL DUTIES/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Any of the following duties may be performed. Check-in and check-out library materials to patrons. Provide information to patrons and collect fines for overdue/lost materials. Assist patrons in locating material and placing patron holds in the small branches. Process patron holds. Shelve library materials. Answer phones and provide requested information or direct calls to appropriate source. Sort and route United States and interoffice mail as assigned when Head Page is not available. Resolve problems regarding patron’s circulation record. Process patron registration. Prepare items for delivery to other libraries. Assist with maintenance of library files. Performs opening and closing duties. Process bills and maintain records for patron overdue accounts, currently at Central Library only. Call patrons about missing AV parts. Clean and repair AV items. Pack and record deliveries. Shelf check for patrons to resolve problems with accounts. Record obituaries as assigned. Set up and Z out cash registers. Sign in and direct patrons to conference rooms. Accompany them to rooms as needed. Print, process and pull materials for pull-on shelf list, unclaimed holds list, and failed call list. Record EPLS materials transiting to other libraries and coming in from other libraries for patron holds. SECONDARY DUTIES: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Assist others with office equipment such as photocopier, fax, computer, printer, etc. Provide back up to others within department. Attends meetings, workshops, seminars. Assist with book donations. Sign for deliveries. When Maintenance or Head Page staff are not available, bring in drop boxes and open/close buildings. Shovel and salt in Winter as needed. 7. Keep records of Priority deliveries in and out. 8. Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned. COMMUNICATION: Contacts are normally made with patrons and Library staff. The position has a requirement to interact with customers frequently and communications may contain discussion about confidential matters. DECISION MAKING/INITIATIVE: The position generally operates from established and well-known procedures. The position typically is responsible for solving problems relating to own workflow and processes and may also work with others to solve problems at the department level. The position may have some responsibility for developing new programs or services that impact the immediate work area or department. The position involves a moderate degree of complexity considering the variety of demands placed on it and the level of detail involved. The position operates independently with minimal supervision. The position encounters recurring work situations with occasional variation from the norm. Decisions are typically made within specific organizational policy constraints and guidelines. ACCOUNTABILITY: The position encounters regular interruptions requiring flexibility. The position foresees issues associated with own work and identifies future needs for supplies, equipment and resources. May also consider the work of others and participate in operational planning at the department level. Decisions typically affect the work unit but may on occasion have an impact across a limited number of work units. Work is occasionally checked by a supervisor or manager. LEADERSHIP: This position is responsible for promoting organizational values within a department/branch as a representative of the organization to the public. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED equivalent. One to two years of related work experience. NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE: Working knowledge of general library operations, functions, and services provided.* Knowledge and support of the principles of Intellectual Freedom.* Considerable knowledge of operations, functions, policies and procedures of the department.* Considerable knowledge of office software programs. Considerable knowledge of database systems such as SIRSI, OCLC, Access or others used by the department.* Working knowledge of Internet based research. *May be acquired after hire. ABILITY TO: Organize and prioritize multiple tasks. Train and assist others. Maintain flexibility in an environment with many interruptions. Analyze and solve problems and use independent judgment. Maintain accurate and detailed records. Work independently with minimal supervision. Work in a team environment. Resolve problems which may involve patrons or vendors. Resolve patron complaints and handle difficult situations involving patrons. Read, speak, write and understand the English language. Communicate effectively with a diverse population. SKILL IN: Effective verbal and written communication with a variety of individuals. The use of computer hardware and software. Establishing and maintaining good customer relations with internal and/or external “customers”. Use of general office equipment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Positions typically require frequent verbal communication, hearing, sitting, reaching, keyboarding, and repetitive motion of hands/wrists, handling, grasping, and use of visual senses. Requirements vary by position but may require pushing and pulling of up to 150 pounds and lifting and carrying from 5 – 50 pounds. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work may be performed in a variety of environments such as office, library or shipping area. Work typically involves extensive close work (eyestrain), PC monitoring, and may require constant or frequent sitting, standing or heavy lifting.
