“It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new.
But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the
adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.”

Literacy and the Common Core
All teachers are literacy teachers under common core
Some educators are bracing for what is expected to be a major shift in teaching and
learning under the Common Core State Standards. The standards call for a greater
focus on nonfiction material and more reading, writing and vocabulary lessons in social
studies and science courses. In social studies, that could mean reading the U.S.
Constitution, Martin Luther King Jr.'s Letter from the Birmingham Jail and other historical
documents, while science courses could include reading scientific journals. Cincinnati

Storytelling and STEM
Why STEM should be integrated into literacy, storytelling
While teachers in the humanities often are encouraged to integrate science, technology,
engineering and math topics in classroom instruction, integration must be a two-way
street, write Jonathan Olsen and Sarah Gross, teachers at High Technology High
School in Lincroft, N.J. In this blog post, they write about the potential benefits of
connecting more STEM lessons to storytelling, artwork and literacy, a change that
potentially could draw more students, including girls, to the STEM field.

NEW School Libraries Build Strong Students Infographic--How Can You Use It?
A note from Sara Kelly Johns…School districts are making decisions NOW about what
positions to cut and school librarians are vulnerable. Support from people who are not
school librarians is crucial, talking to school board members and superintendents,
attending budget hearings.
How could you use the new AASL "Strong Libraries build Strong Students" Infographic?
In an AASLForum message, Virginia school librarian Ann Crewdson said: "The
Infographic has style! It’s succinct and shows the importance of school librarians in a
visually appealing and educational way. I’ve forwarded it to PTAs, Parent FB groups
and the superintendent of public instruction in my daughter’s school district. I plan to
forward it to more groups and leaders soon." It's here:
