A Message from… the New York Library Association
Greetings NY Library Community,
Thanks to the efforts of the over 1000 advocates who traveled to Albany for Library
Advocacy Day on Tuesday, March 5, the NYS Senate has included a proposed
restoration of $4 million in Library Aid for the F.Y. 2013-14 NYS Budget. Alas the NYS
Assembly did not follow suit, and have only included the funding levels equal to what
the Governor proposed in his Executive Budget (flat funding from F.Y. 2012-13).
Your Action is Need NOW!
A new message has been loaded into NYLA’s Online Advocacy Center.
Even if you have already written to your elected officials regarding library
funding, please do so again using this new message!
NYLA’s Online Advocacy Center – click the link and then click ‘Take Action’ to send
your message.
Please feel free to edit the message provided and add details about your local library or
library system.
Take your library advocacy to the next level – make a phone call
You can look up your elected representative and their contact information here: NYS
Representative Search Page
Your representative’s office logs every phone call they receive, and the subject of the
call – make your voice heard – literally!
All you have to say is:
“I am a constituent of Assemblymember or Senator XYZ, and I am calling to voice my
support for inclusion of the proposed restoration of $4 million to Library Aid funding in
the NYS Budget as it appears in the Senate’s budget bill.”
As the Senate and Assembly negotiate to craft a consensus budget between their two
independent bills, your outreach is extremely important to ensuring that the Senateproposed $4 million restoration in Library Aid is included in the final NYS Budget.
Never doubt that your actions have an impact!

School Uses Brain-based Research to Guide Lessons
Teachers at a private school in Maryland are studying research on teaching, learning
and the brain and applying that knowledge in the classroom. Among other things,
teachers have used research to guide their decisions to allow students to exercise
before tackling complicated work, start the school day later for older students, and plan
their classes based on studies showing that students retain more of what they learn at
the beginning and end of class. The Washington Post (3/5)
How to Engage Students in Inquiry Learning
Students can discover their own paths to learning -- a process known as inquiry
learning, writes former history teacher Diana Laufenberg. Among her eight suggestions
for accomplishing this process is for teachers to be flexible, encourage curiosity among
students, set ways for students to participate in class and teach students, not subjects.
Laufenberg, speaking at the recent SXSWedu Conference & Festival in Texas, also
recommended providing opportunities for experiential learning and embracing failure as
part of the process. KQED.org/Mind/Shift blog
