Job Title: School Counselor
Job Summary:
The job of Mental Health Counselor was established for the purposes of assessing students’ intellectual and
functional levels; developing behavior plans; providing information on child development issues to school
personnel and parents; collaborating with community agencies regarding individual student plans; and providing
recommendations for program development and student placement.
Reports to: Building administrators
Payment Rate: According to Certified Salary Schedule
Essential Functions:
Assist in test coordination for the purpose of ensuring proper validation, procedure, and security of state, local, and
national testing.
Consult closely with administrators and teachers for the purpose of promoting student success.
Create and revise student schedules for the purpose of ensuring proper class placement, correct scheduling
problems, and develop proper student placement.
Facilitate meetings, processes, etc. for the purpose of meeting curriculum guidelines and/or ensuring that state
mandates are achieved.
Implement school wide program development and program evaluation (e.g. crisis intervention services, etc.) for the
purposes of ensuring effective programs to assist children who experience physical, mental, social or emotional
difficulties.
Intervene in occurrences of inappropriate behavior of students for the purpose of assisting students in modifying
such behavior and developing successful interpersonal skills.
Participate in meetings, workshops, and seminars as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering
information required to perform functions.
Prepare a wide variety of written materials (e.g. quantity reports, student activities, correspondence internal audits,
etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
Research resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and methods,
community resources, etc.) for the purpose of determining the appropriate approach for addressing students’
functional goals
Supervise interns, practicum students and others for the purpose of monitoring performance, providing for
professional growth and achieving overall objectives of school’s curriculum.
Serve on Teacher Support Team for the purpose of assisting teachers with students who are failing by assisting with
interventions, contacting parents, counseling parents, providing background information on grades, etc.
Maintain professional relationships with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, parents, and community
members for the purpose of having a working relationship with everyone who are stake holders in the school
system.

Job Description
Perform home visits for the purpose of assessing needs for students who display as-risk behavior in areas of
dropping out, neglect, abuse, continuous failure, or chronic problems as assessed by the counselor or other school
professional.
Identify potential dropouts for the purpose of providing information and assistance for placement in programs and
giving information about making realistic decisions.
Compose a variety of materials (e.g. reports, memos, procedures, etc.) for the purpose of evaluating solving
problems and/or resolving conflicts.
Coordinate with community agencies including medical, judicial, social service, and mental health services for the
purposes of determining appropriate treatment, etc. to meet the needs of specific students.
Perform other related duties efficiently, promptly, and dependably, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the
efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Physical Requirements/Environmental Condition:
Requires prolonged standing, or moving around the classroom, occasional stooping, bending and reaching, sometime
noisy and crowded environments. Maintain emotional control under stress.
Qualifications:
Education – training: B.S/B.A in job related area, Mississippi “A” certification or higher endorsement in
teaching area, knowledge of teaching methods, fair and consistent
