Churchbridge Daycare Cooperative May Newsletter 2015 Wow can’t believe that it’s May already and the sun has finally decided to grace us with its presence lol. The kids have been spending lots of time outside playing and exploring! Like previous summers we are going to ask all families to bring a swimsuit and towel to leave at daycare during the week in the event that we are able to randomly take the kids swimming. We will also get all families to sign special excursion forms for swimming days. This will allow us to take all ages swimming when ratio/numbers and staffing allows. In the special excursion agreement between families and the daycare it will state….if you don’t have a pool pass you will be charged the appropriate rate to your daycare bill. Please remember that 5 and under are free!!! PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THE TOWEL AND SWIMSUIT/TRUNKS ARE LABELLED! June Daze is just around the corner! Our annual June Daze Carnival will be held on June 13th from 1:00 pm3:00 pm! It will be very similar to last year; there will be the large and small bouncer, cake walk, the guessing game, hopefully some ponies and many other fun games! We require help with set up, take down, and we also need workers throughout the event, we will also be looking for cake and jar donations. There will be signup sheets posted shortly! We truly appreciate the support and help from our families…the event wouldn’t be possible without you and all the hard work from our staff! We would like to say good-bye to Sydney who is leaving us for the summer but will stay on as a casual employee but we would like to welcome Richelle who will start the middle of May in the Crane room as a temporary full time teacher with programming responsibilities. Richelle is re-locating from Saskatoon where she also works at a daycare center and holds her ECE level 2! We are excited to have her join our daycare family! Please remember to… 1) Have monthly planners in by the 20th of each month. 2) All invoices are to be paid by the end of the month. 3) Scholastic is due back on the 15th of the month. 4) Please sign the attendance records every month. It is located on the desk beside procare! How did April manage to fly by so fast? During April we went for many walks around town by ourselves and with the toddlers. We also spent many afternoons playing in the sand box. It has become a favourite for babies and we can spend hours just sitting and scooping the sand. One afternoon a Liam, William, and AJ came out and played with us in the sandbox. We dug a hole so big we buried Zayd. We have also made many spring theme crafts. Don't forget to look around at the pictures and art hanging up. Once again I have moved the room around we now have a sandbox instead of a sand table and a new couch to hangout on. It works great for story time and singing songs as a group. Please send a hat to daycare with your child daily! Kami and the 'Munchkins' Kami is always doing fun and messy crafts with t babies! However some of them get messier than hers lol Great weather, Great kids and Great co-workers make for an AWSOME SPRING!!! The weather hasn’t always been cooperative but we still managed to get outside as much as we could!! April was a great month. The toddlers had fun getting ready for Easter by decorating the room and doing spring/Easter activities! I hope everyone enjoyed the bunny picture! (The children really didn’t want to sit long enough to get a picture LOL) I had taken a week off at the beginning of the month but the toddlers had a great time with Sydney. The kids and I have been going on a lot of walks around town and they love seeing and hearing the birds! I have been showing them lady bugs and other sort of bugs while on the walk. The kids really love our Friday walks to the store. They love going down each aisle and get very vocal when they see something they like. At the store we usually buy crackers and on occasion juice boxes (they are very messy ;) so it doesn’t happen often! In May we will be working on celebrating mother’s day! This month I also want to do more on bugs and nature. I have a week planned about trees and grass and I am hoping the kids enjoy it! Having a rest after a That’s all for now! busy day…but for Kim and the Toddlers whom?? Kim or the toddler’s lol Buggy Rides are always a favourite in the toddler room! I won’t say that we are out of the woods as far as the weather is concerned (one can never truly be sure about that when they live in Saskatchewan), but we are hoping for drier, sunnier days from here on out! We have been spending a lot of time outdoors recently and are very excited for all of the changes that we are seeing in nature! We started the month off by learning about some poetry; our focus was on Shel Silverstein, who writes very silly poems. The kids learned some facts about mice and hunted for little rubber ones that I hid in the hall, practiced an art technique called pointillism to create our ‘frog in the fog’, and poked spaghetti noodles through hot dogs then cooked them up to go with their lunch. Following our poetry unit, we focused on 5 great artists, who the children all learned by name. Their favorite was “Pablo Picasso” -- because it is just fun to say! We did up cycled portraits, water painted lily ponds like Monet, inverted acrylic paintings like Michelangelo (Rylee painted more than just her paper and used more than just her paint brush… her ponytail swept through the paint and created a picture on the floor! -- not a fan of inverted painting!), and sketched a ‘vase’ of flowers like Van Gogh. These pieces of art will be on sale in the hall near the Starfish Room for the month of May, and all funds raised will go towards openended objects and art supplies for the room. You can never have enough envelopes! In the last two weeks we are focusing on spring, and while the green and the heat have been slow in coming, we are definitely seeing signs of life! We have found, observed, and touched snakes, ladybugs, and dandelions; have collected and painted numerous favorite sticks and rocks; and have planned a special building project in the ‘back woods’ that the kids are VERY excited about. It is our aim to spend several entire days in the ‘outback’ this summer, with the exception of bathroom breaks, so I am in the process of investigating tick repellent options. I witness a lot of independence, curiosity, team work, and imagination and am reminded of my own childhood when we are ‘exploring’, and the kids really love it. In May we are going to learn about mothers (all activities are secret, though) and will also plan out and plant our garden. Joann Soloway kindly donated many seeds and the kids will have the opportunity to sketch out our plot using a ruler and will practice their letters by spelling the names of the veggies that we will plant. They will hoe, dig, pull weeds, and water… I know it sounds like work, but they enjoy it… We are also planning a bug hotel as the kids often go on bug hunts and are so captivated by these tiny insects. Our hotel will have plenty of small dark spaces that will be a ‘safe place’ for our buggy friends. We will also learn about fairy tales towards the end of the month and will extend our imaginative play to the outdoors. Please make sure that you have a sweater/coat for your child for windy or cool days, as well as a hat/toque, appropriate outdoor footwear, and extra clothes that are clean and ready for use. Lindee and the Preschoolers May is Early Learning and Childcare Month!!! Churchbridge Daycare strives for excellence in early learning. We promote self-expression of the child and encourage curiosity and adventure daily. We strive to meet developmental milestones of all the children through play and exploration!!! Did you know? * all of our full time teachers have taken postsecondary education and received level one, two or three in Early Childhood Education * all of our teachers continue to educate themselves on new Early Childhood Education practices, theories and gain new ideas and activities by participating in workshops, conferences and by visiting other high quality centers * all of our full time teachers give up a lot of their own time to plan and prepare activities or change the room environments after daycare hours and on weekends We as educators put in 110% each and every day please show your appreciation and do something special for them.
