1. JOB PURPOSE
Gallery Invigilators work on the front line of The Hepworth Wakefield and play a vital role in
creating the continued positive public perception of the gallery. They ensure a safe,
knowledgeable, efficient and professional service is delivered at all times whether in one of the
ten main gallery spaces or other temporary exhibition spaces at The Hepworth Wakefield.
They will present and facilitate visitor’s gallery experience providing world-class customer
service with a focus on visitor engagement, ensuring The Hepworth Wakefield as a must-visit,
must-return-to visitor venue.
2. KEY RESULT AREAS
1. Establish and maintain good relations with the visiting public, artists, Hepworth staff and all
other visitors to The Hepworth Wakefield.
2. Ensure an excellent visitor experience is offered at all times, helping to establish a high
rate of repeat visits.
3. Ensure data collection meets agreed standards and targets, adhering to Data Protection
Regulations at all times.
4. Actively promote the full visitor offer including retail and café promotions and the public
events programme.
5. Remain vigilant at all times to prevent damage to or loss of art works and gallery property
and ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all visitors using established reporting
systems.
6. Work collaboratively with the Visitor Services, Learning, Marketing, and Collections and
Exhibitions teams to continually develop the visitor offer.
7. Maintain and improve efficiency and effectiveness wherever possible and necessary.
8. Ensure all of The Hepworth Wakefield’s facilities are presented at the highest possible
standard taking a proactive approach to reporting and resolving issues.

Knowledge


An understanding of the principles and importance of customer care. (E)
Ability to use a computer and a range of software applications with confidence and
accuracy. (D)
Knowledge of regional, national and international artists and a passion for the visual
arts. (E)
Knowledge of the importance of Health and Safety and Security as it affects a public

An art related qualification at A-Level or above (D)




Experience

Experience of a busy customer focused operation, ideally a high profile visitor attraction
or artistic environment. (E)
Experience of gallery invigilation, ushering or stewarding, ideally in a visual arts

5. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Gallery Invigilators provide the vital link between The Hepworth Wakefield and its audiences They will welcome all visitors to the gallery and assist them as necessary during their visit,
providing relevant and up to date information in a positive, knowledgeable and friendly
manner. They will support all visitor interaction but in particular in gallery spaces, invigilating
displays and exhibitions to ensure safety and security and provide engagement and
interpretation for a wide range of visitors.
Gallery Invigilators may support Visitor Services Assistants in developing training material and
this will include researching artists and artistic practises and compiling text and images.
Gallery Invigilators will be supported by volunteers, and GIs are therefore required to assist in
inducting and supporting volunteers as required.
Gallery Invigilators will be required to maintain an in-depth knowledge of the Hepworth’s
collection and temporary exhibitions, attending training and development activity accordingly.
Gallery Invigilators will constantly strive to maximise visitor experience and contribute to the
continued viability and sustainability of the Hepworth Wakefield.
Gallery Invigilators will ensure all facilities are presented at the highest possible standards, this
will include assisting Visitor Services Assistants and Duty Managers with open and close down
procedures ensuring galleries and exhibitions are fully operational in time for public opening.
GIs will take a proactive approach to resolving issues such as housekeeping and cleanliness,
maintaining the aesthetic and professional appearance of the Hepworth Wakefield.
GIs will be the eyes and ears of The Hepworth and it is vital that they report on visitor
experience and operational issues including Health and Safety issues and security and comply
with the Hepworth’s Health and Safety policy and operating procedures at all times.
