April Program: Let’s Get Down to Business!
April 10, 7:00 pm
Colchester
Historical
Society Board
of Governors
President:
Angela George
Vice President:
Sally Whipple
Treasurer:
Debbie Hayn
The Society is pleased to join local proprietor, Jack Faski and the
Colchester Business Association on Tuesday, April 10th at 7:00 pm
at the historic Hayward House in Colchester.
The Colchester Historical Society will be featuring the newly restored 1740’s account book of James
Stewart’s general store as well as a diverse collection of vintage business memorabilia from our
collections. The James Stewart ledger provides a rare glimpse of a business in town 272 years ago!
The account book features hand scribed entries of many local citizens including 5 Bulkeley family
members, Thomas Carrier (son of Martha Carrier, hung as a witch in Salem), Daniel Foote, Freedom
Chamberlain and Seth Wetmore of Middletown whose parlor is now reconstructed as the the
"Wetmore Parlor" at Wadsworth Atheneum, to name a few. See how buying on credit is not a new
concept!
The Society will also be exhibiting well-documented manuscripts by Dr. C.E. Pendleton, town clerk
and historian in the 1930’s and 40’s. Vintage photos and unique artifacts highlighting drug stores,
hotels, mills, factories and other business sites will also be displayed.
Join us for a complimentary glass of wine. Admission is free, however space is limited and an
RSVP is required to attend. Please call 860 537-5596 or email: mail@colchesterhistory.org. A
short general membership meeting will precede the program.
