Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year!
This year is going to be an exciting year! I am excited to start this year off and
I look forward to working with your child. I hope that we can work together to
achieve our goals and reach your child’s potential. In our journey this year, I ask for
your support and encouragement. Together, we can work for your child’s academic
success. If you have any questions or concerns, contact me by phone or email.

Mathematics
COURSE OVERVIEW: Students will study concepts following the Common Core
State Standards for Mathematics. This will emphasize on developing understanding
of and applying proportional relationships; developing understanding of operations
with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; solving
problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and
working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area,
surface area, and volume; and drawing inferences about populations based on
samples.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
 Our objective is to be able to utilize mathematical reasoning and apply them
to real-world situations through using a variety of mathematical practices
such as make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, reason
abstractly and quantitatively, construct viable arguments and critique the
reasoning of others, model with mathematics, use appropriate tools
strategically, attend to precision, look for and make use of structure, and look
for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Materials
 Everyday, students are required to bring their assigned textbooks, iPads,
homework folders, spiral notebooks, highlighters, pens, pencils, color pencils,
erasers, and lined paper.
Homework
 Homework will be given daily and turned in completed the next day. Daily
homework assignments will consist of unfinished class assignments,
additional skills practice, and study guides.
Grading
A= 100-90% B=89-80% C=79-70% D=69-60% F=59-0%
Grades will be based on participation, class activities, class notes, homework,
assessments, chapter tests, and unit examinations.
SCIENCE
COURSE OVERVIEW: Students will study topics ranging over the life sciences,
earth sciences, and the physical sciences. The main phenomenon that will be
investigated will be the web of life, specifically how natural processes and human
activities affect this delicate balance. Students will learn science by doing science.
Students will be making observations, analyzing data, conducting investigations,
building models and diagrams, and collaborating with their peers to figure out solutions
to problems concerning the natural world. These practices are the methods and tools
used by real scientists to make discoveries, cure diseases, predict phenomena, and
explain how the world works. Students will model these practices so that they may
develop habits to be successful in high school and beyond.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
 Knowledge and understanding by modeling and engaging in scientific practices
such as making observations, analyzing data, conducting investigations, building
models and diagrams, quantifying results, and collaborating with peers. Students
will become acquainted with scientific concepts and methods by applying them
to real-world scenarios which require real-world solutions.
Homework
 This year the majority of homework assignments will be assigned through
online Schoology posts, as well as, projects, labs and study guides. This year
students are required to keep science journal in which will have a collection
of class notes and labs. This journal will be graded.
Grading
A= 100-90% B=89-80% C=79-70% D=69-60% F=59-0%
Grades will be based on participation, class activities, class notes, homework,
science journal, science labs, science projects, assessments, chapter tests, and unit
examinations.
ACCOMODATIONS
Accommodations will be given according to what is stated in the student’s IEP. If
further supports are needed, please review tutoring schedule posted on the school
website or visit the office for a copy. If there are questions or concerns regarding
student grades and assignments, you may schedule a meeting with me to organize a
day for the student to attend after school tutoring with me.
CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:
Enter quietly and go straight to your seat. Take out whatever materials are needed for the
activity listed on the day's schedule.
Daily work will be posted on the board and will also be posted on Schoology. All work
must be properly labeled. Work should be done neatly and completely. Late and missing
work will negatively affect your grade.
Water is allowed in class, as long as it has a lid. No food or other beverage is allowed.
You may sharpen your pencil, or get a Kleenex anytime, if it does not interfere with my
teaching. Do not cause a distraction.
Restroom use should be done during nutrition and lunch.
Parent Portal All assignments in the grade book are available through the online parent
portal on Schoology. You can see your student’s grade 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
Contact the office if you have not signed up to receive your pass code.
Absences: Students are responsible for getting their missing assignments. Late work is
accepted until the end of each trimester. If work is not made up, that assignment will
receive no credit.
Dismissal: The bell does not dismiss the class, the teacher does.
Classroom Visitors/ Substitutes: Please treat them with respect. If the visitor does NOT
need to talk with me, continue working. If the visitor DOES need to talk to me, please
quietly wait in your seat until we are done talking. You may whisper to each other IF you
are given permission to do so. Students who misbehave will pay consequences, as
inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated.
Technology: Students must charge iPads at home and bring them to school charged
daily. Students are also responsible for organizing documents on their iPads by subject
level. DO NOT erase old notes or assignments unless told to do so. Review the following
policy for iPads and technology
1. If caught on a different app during instructional time, students will receive a
warning. On the second offense, iPads will be taken and given to the office.
Only parents can pick up the iPad from the office afterschool.
2. If an iPad is confiscated twice in one trimester and turned into the office, the
student will lose the privilege of having an iPad for the rest of the trimester.
